American Literature

This course aims to increase students' abilities to recognize and appreciate American writers. Students will be encouraged to consider how an author’s work reflects the times in which they live and their own personal worldview. We will also be exploring the voices of traditionally marginalized groups such as indigenous peoples and people of color. We will strive to read with humility, compassion and discernment, keeping in mind the scripture from Micah 6:8: "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"

In addition to studying various forms of literature, students will respond to the literature through discussions, writing and creative projects.
