Forest Nursery

Purpose

We transformed our greenhouse into a forest nursery, so we could grow more trees to help restore forests. Trees make oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas. We can plant more trees and help restore forests after wildfires, or other human impacts, destroy them. In Spring, we will have plants we can provide to the victims of the Loma Fire.

"We need to understand that wildfires are a necessary part of our forest ecosystem, but climate change is making it more difficult for forests to regenerate on their own. Wildfires in California are already larger, burn hotter, last longer, and are more frequent than usual. The forests will need our help."

- Katrina Leni-Konig, science teacher at Mount Madonna School

Katrina is optimistic that this project will inspire us, and others, to help make a difference with our lives.

GREENHOUSE RENOVATIon

In recent years, the greenhouse had little use and was overgrown with weeds. We organized the many pots, put all the dirt in buckets and did A LOT of weeding. We made a new table and got rid of two unusable ones. We patched up holes with special tape. We recycled all the garbage and broken pots that were taking up important room. Now it is called the MMS Forest Nursery.

Madrone Cuttings

In addition to our seed bank, we are trying to start trees from cuttings. This is our first nursery project while the seeds are in hibernation. We will test starting plants from cuttings vs. seeds.
