The topic of this seminar was the first half of the book Just Mercy. I got the grade of an exceeds on both the written and oral portions of this Socratic seminar. The reason that I got an exceeds on both of the seminar sections was because I went above and beyond by making sure to include statistics, quote Just Mercy and use historical context. For my next seminar, I would like to recive another exeeds by including others in the conversation. and helping myself out by not procrastonating the seminar questions homework.
The book just Mercy is an autobiography by Bryan Stevenson about his time as a lawyer working to middagate people's convictions from Alabama's death row.
Just Mercy Long-Term Learning Target: I can demonstrate my knowledge of Early American history, government and civics through a TED Talk-style presentation that analyzes the major political and social changes that affected the definition of citizenship and the rights of citizens, and explain how those changes continue to impact marginalized groups today.
Kit Carson Long-Term Learning Target: I can apply my knowledge of Westward Expansion, geography and government by constructing a well-organized mock trial for or against Kit Carson using logical reasoning, relevant and credible evidence, and acknowledgement of opposing claims.
To prepare for our Ted talks and decide on our topics, we did initial research to make sure we understand and have background knowledge on the topics before we deep dive. I received a meets + on this assignment.
I received an overall score of beggining of year score of mid 8 (645) meaning I tested above grade level for the beggining of the year. I scored 81st percentile on this assessment. I scored best in comprehension of literature, and vocabulary. By the end of the year I-ready test, I want to score 658 Wich is my stretch goal.
In this project, I learned how mass incarceration rates, especially in privately owned prisons have affected societies. This project also taught me how to present confidently and calmly without stuttering or using filler words. This project had a positive impact on my public speaking skills as well, I even saw that improvement in my science presentation. I got an exceeds on my ted talk slides and research sections because I put in lots of effort and refined before the actual presentation. I got an meets on my oral presentation, I was shooting for an exceeds on my oral presentation and I think that my practice runs were better than the real presentation, but I stuttered a little more and did not make eye contact with the audience as much as I wanted to.
In this mock trial, one of the main skills I practiced was my public speaking skills to present my opening, direct and cross at the mock trial. I also grew as a student by refining and putting the best effort in every aspect of this mock trial. I learned so much that I did not know before about how an actual trial works. I really enjoyed doing this project and I thought it was a fun way to learn. I could apply this in my future in the DHS law and government class and by maybe joining mock trial in high school or college. I learned about myself that I actually am really interested in the justice system and how it works. Based on the rubric, for this overall project I would give myself a meets or maybe a meets+, this is because I feel like I completed all of the required aspects and more for this project. Some goals I want to set for myself for the final unit of Humanitites are staying on top of my work and keeping a positive attitude because sometimes in the final quarter of school I get a little bit lazy and don't want to do school.
