Orchestra Buddies is a program that pairs interested 5th grade orchestra students with a high school orchestra “mentor” who will help our younger students improve their playing skills and grow their love for music!
Elementary students get additional support on their instrument and build connections with older players, who help them see what’s in store for them as they progress through the Mounds View orchestra program. High school mentors gain experience working with younger students, and serve as excellent role models for our young players.
Program Model:
Our high school volunteers have signed up to give weekly one-on-one 20 minute Google Meet lessons with our elementary players, which provides added support and encouragement on material students are working on with their orchestra teachers in school. These lessons are offered at no cost to our district families, but space is limited by the number of student mentors we have. Here are the details to know before signing up:
Your child will have a one-on-one lesson once a week via Google Meet with a high school orchestra student. Consistent attendance at these lessons is required so that we are making the best use of available mentorship time. If your child has more than two unexcused absences from their lessons, their lesson slot will be forfeited and offered to another student.
Students will be paired with a high school student based on schedule availability and priority will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. We also work to ensure that an even number of slots are reserved for students from all of our elementary schools. Please fill out the Google interest form as soon as possible to express your interest. Lessons are not guaranteed; if we cannot accommodate your schedule, your child will be placed on a waiting list.
