9:00 AM Gidinendamowinaan: Understanding Ojibwe Traditional Scientific Knowledge and Epistemology through Ojibwe Language Morphemes and Cultural Teachings
Aanakwadikwe (Winonah), Bell Museum MN and Misaabekong Ojibwe Immersion Educator
This presentation will focus on the nature of Indigenous - specifically Ojibwe/Anishinaabe - language and cultural immersion education and how STEM is achieved through them. I will describe the protocols of working with Indigenous educators and communities and providing opportunities for them. I will also describe the curriculum work I focus on; which includes working with first language speakers of Ojibwe to create modern astronomical and physics terms, and also revive archaic linguistic terms used to describe scientific phenomena in nature. I will discuss the methods of teaching science-based inquiry to students through the Ojibwe language and culture. I will also present on the work I have done at the Bell Museum through the Statewide Engagement Team to provide opportunities for both the public and Indigenous communities within Minnesota; which includes presenting Ojibwe astronomy shows in the exploradome and planetarium, Indigenous focused field trips, and various events.
