The featured lecture by Van Romero from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology introduced us to the fascinating story of the civilization present in Chaco Canyon New Mexico 900-1200 A.D. Sun daggers and their relation to a stone spiral served as a precise calendar for the inhabitants.
Smart telescopes in the class room! Judy Vondruska, Ph. D., from South Dakota State University in Brookings gave a presentation on how to make productive use of SeeStar telescopes in introductory astronomy courses. With the new equatorial mounts, and student smartphone skills, one can engage students and the public in deep space imaging, even in a Walmart parking lot.
Rachel Humphrey presented on the experiences of a group of students and faculty from St. Cloud State University during the Ecplise Ballooning Project. She showed a picture of the current state of the Observatory at SCSU. Of course, everybody on the room will now forever worry about what is under the tarp!
Marc Tiritilli from Illinois Wesleyan University, and Dylan Collette from Oglethorpe University lead the hardware section. Meteorites, image enhancers, mounting hardware galore.
Matthew Craig from Minnesota State Moorhead introduced Python and AstroPy. Kevin Schindler from RVCC Planetarium and 3M Observatory discussed challenges of astro clubs and engaging outreach activities with the room.
