Well-being and a happy environment are the most important foundations for learning. Young children benefit from structure to their days. The predictable repetition of an everyday routine makes them feel safe. Usually, the more children can predict their world, the safer they feel, the happier they are, the better they play and learn.
This is why we suggest following a couple of loosely timed daily routines. The routines are sequences of three events that you keep the same everyday. We have provided you with five visual time tables of these sequences below. Following these sequenced routines is a good way to put some structure into your child's day and also keeps nursery learning going.
We understand that it might not be possible to follow all of our suggestions everyday, we know every family has different situations. But please try and see what works for you, your child and your whole family and then have fun adding some of our suggestions to your existing routine!
around 7-8 am: Getting up at about the same time everyday
Have a good breakfast together after getting up
Show your child how to brush teeth together every day after breakfast
around 10am and 2pm: Healthy snack time together at about the same time every morning. This is a good time encourage your children to drink water or milk from an open cup and to serve themselves. We provide several different kinds of snacks and ask them to choose what they would like to eat. If they point to what they would like, we name their choice and encourage them to repeat the word.
Then join our morning zoom meeting at 11 a.m or 1p.m
Come and say hello to the your friends at virtual circle time, sing a song with us or listen to a story and share ideas for things to do!
You can follow the Zoom meeting with an activity from this website, for example why not have a go at Ketty's Yoga session! You might need to watch the video first as some will need a small amount of adult preparation.
Your family can also try some baking, cooking, pottery, yoga or art with all the family. There are lots of free classes on the Extended Services programme for Family Learning time.
Around 10 am or 2p.m : Have a healthy snack and then take your child outside for a walk or to a playground.
It is important to let your child walk as much as possible to develop their muscles.
When you are out and about talk to your child about what you can see and hear.
When you come back from a walk try to have 10-15 minutes to sit on the floor with your child, surrounded by their toys. Use this time to let your child choose what they want to play. Try to play next to your child with your own ideas or copy what they are doing. Naming objects and talking to your child about what they are doing is good for their language development. You do not need to speak in English.
Follow playtime with a short tidy up time where your child and you tidy away the toys you have been using. It is important for young children to join in tidy up time like we do at nursery.
around 12-1pm: Having a healthy lunch together at about the same time everyday. day! We love trying vegetables and fruit to stay healthy!
Then relax and let your child choose a recorded story time video from our nursery website...
...before having a good rest. Try and get any sleeping time down to about one hour. This will make your children go to bed earlier in the evening and give you time to do something for yourself.
At around 6-7pm: Having dinner at about the same time everyday helps the children with a routine. Young children need lots of breaks for food.
Follow dinner with wash time (or the other way round)- use this time to have fun with your children, for example give them a couple of recycled yoghurt pots and let them pour water from one pot into the other and learn the idea of 'full and empty'.
Then snuggle up with a bedtime story to say goodnight. Children will love time with you and a book. Look at books in any way you like, you can read the story or point at things and name them. It is better to have more than one book with you so your children can choose what to look at. You don't have to finish a book, and you can name things you see in any language you speak, or simply turn the pages of a book. This is a great time to encourage your child to relax before going to sleep.
Let your children have some time to come up with their own ideas . You only need to make sure that they are safe and they will entertain you with their play.
It is very important to limit screen time and it is suggested to look at a screen for no more than 2 hours a day. Try to chose programmes that have lots of talking rather than noise. Otherwise your children will use noises rather than words.
If you want to start potty training and need any advice, please let us know.
