School dances seem like a good idea but if you take a closer look at them you can learn so much more that you would have never expected. Take the M.A. Halloween dance as an example, it started off well but then ended in disaster!
Schools always choose to do dances as a fun activity but then they release a bunch of rules that make it no fun. Our dance had a rule that said no blood/gore or masks. The blood and gore we can kind of understand because some people are sensitive to that type of stuff. But even if they are sensitive the dance is only for middle school/junior high students so there will be no little elementary kids so adding that rule was kind of unnecessary.
Feedback
There were many rules that made things rather boring. When whe checked in we couldn’t bring our backpacks in. Like what do they think we would do? Try and take the food that was literally only cookies. Why would people want to take that? Not to mention that there were pretty much no decorations. I used to remember the daddy-daughter ball the school does and there are many pretty decorations. So my question is why couldn’t they put more and better decorations? The music wasn’t even that great either. Not gonna lie, it has been way better compared to other past years but I say they should also put different styles of music. Some different types of music they could have put in the playlists were simple songs people can dance to bachata or cumbia, because it was literally pretty much pop.
What happened at the dance
So here is what happened. The dance started off alright, people weren’t really dancing much. Also the grades didn’t really mix. Around 30 minutes into the dance several students started crying. Personally I started to cry so I went to the bathroom with 2 friends who were trying to comfort me and the lady didn’t let all of us in, she said “only two girls can go together”. The dance was pretty problematic because like 10 people cried and someone even threw up. About an hour into the dance a group of sixth graders started dancing. After this many other people started dancing or just messing around on the dance floor. The dance was just very awkward and uncomfortable.
Pros
People could spend time together outside of school hours.
Couples could dance with each other.
The 8th graders made it fun for the rest of the grades.
Cons
There were many rules so it was like we were in school.
The announcement said that it was supposedly going to be the darkest dance of the year when in reality there was only 1 dark corner.
Teacher Reviews
That everything was ready to go. She wishes that the photoshoot thing was inside the gym, not outside and that it was bigger. Students in costume and outside. They had snacks and drinks. 4 stars out of 5.
What People Are Saying
By: Miroku Stuart, Ray Hezkeia, Joshua Carver
Lots of kids recommend science club. Ishmail recommends the science club because they have a nice teacher. He says that the most exciting thing he’s done there is make pumpkin pie! I bet that would be very fun. June suggests you join science club because it is fun and educational. She also says that they got to make race cars, too! Maybe they’ll do something even cooler.
Many people endorse chess club. Daniel says it’s really fun to play with friends. Jon also suggests this club because they get to play other board games, like speed monopoly and topple domino towers! I would love to do that kind of stuff! I bet there are lots of different fun games too.
If you want the chance to influence the book that students will draw all over and pull off their shelf every few years to remember what it was like to be young once, then I know just the club for you. Yearbook club is all about taking pictures, writing blurbs, and organizing everyone’s photographs. It’s a lot of work and a lot of fun. Katherine “Don’t Call me Kat” Larsen notes, “I love photography. It’s one of my huge passions… I like going around to clubs and taking photos”. Malloree Araiza says her favorite moment was going to the soccer games to take photos. “It’s fun to do after school.” She enjoys spending time with her friends, there.
Many kids recommend middle school art club because it is very calming. Most of the students love using clay to make sculptures. Some of the students say that it takes most time away because it is very relaxing. I don’t know about you, but that sounds nice.
A lot of people from the debate team seem to like to see the opinions of others. Like, for example, Ashley says that it is fun because she likes seeing other people's opinions. And Gabe says that it can really help you out with the bonding experience with others. He also said that it will increase your reaction time.
The last club to plug is, of course, ours! In journalism club, we are writing articles, doing interviews, and managing a website to spread school spirit and occasionally do a little detective work. If you like writing and/or investigating stuff, then it’s a fun way to spend an hour every week. Not to mention you’ll be a member of our very first paper. Ray, one of our writers, said that his favorite part has been conducting interviews and writing stories. Our other writer, Miroku, says that writing the articles has been of particular interest. He says enjoying writing makes it especially fun.
