The Online Intercultural Exchange (OIE) Research Cluster is a group of academics in the School of Languages, Literature, Cultures and Linguistics that researches the role of virtual exchange in shaping higher education policies, practices and discourses.
The cluster was formed in 2022 with an internal Strategic Grant from the Faculty of Arts, and is co-lead by Associate Professor Jeremy Breaden and Dr Nadine Normand-Marconnet. The cluster conducts collaborative research on different facets of virtual exchange in higher education with a particular emphasis on:
Student as Partners (SaP) and virtual mobility
Equity, diversity and inclusion and virtual mobility
Multilingualism and virtual exchange

Online intercultural exchange has been part of Jeremy's teaching practice since 2019. He also undertakes research on both the pedagogical and strategic dimensions of OIE as part of a wider scholarly interest in the internationalisation of higher education.
Nadine is exploring global challenges related to diversity and social cohesion. She believes that virtual exchanges create transformative learning experiences that bridge cultural divides.
