A wide range of Faculty-wide teaching business processes are available on the Arts business processes page (public) or Arts intranet (staff only). University policies and procedures are avaialable in the Policy Bank. This is a vital resource for all teaching staff in the Faculty. It includes detail on (among other topics):
Assessment and feedback procedures
Assessment extension and late assessment submission
Assessment remarking
Please ensure that you are familiar with these policies and procedures as you begin your time teaching at Monash.
Staff will likely experience contact with students who may be experiencing psychological distress or suicidality. It is important to remember that most distressed students are not actively suicidal, however we have a responsibility to take action when we identify serious dangers to students’ safety.
If a student reports general concerns for their wellbeing or mental health, provide encouragement and resources to access relevant wellbeing services including:
● Monash University Counselling Service (9905 3020)
● Monash University Health Service (Clayton 9905 3175; Caulfield 9903 1177)
● Monash Afterhours Counselling (24/7; 1300 788 336)
These services can offer same day support for urgent situations where students are willing to access professional support.
If there is evidence a student is at serious risk of harm to themselves and appears unwilling or unable to access professional support (or there are other complicating factors):
● Teaching Associates should escalate the issue to their unit coordinator
● Unit coordinators should contact Safer Communities Unit on 9905 1599 (or Campus Security on 9905 3333 if afterhours) for consultation and advice
● Unit coordinators should inform their Head of School
If the danger to the student appears immediate and life threatening contact emergency services on 000 to perform a welfare check.
When escalating or consulting email/text is not appropriate for urgent situations. It is important communication within your school and to other areas occurs immediately via telephone, including after hours.
If you are unsure what to do, the most important thing is to consult with someone who can provide you with advice and reassurance.
