Reading is to your brain what water is to a tree. Every time you open a book, you strengthen your ability to focus, think critically, and imagine. Research shows that reading for pleasure helps you do better in school, feel more confident, and see the world through new eyes.
When you read whole books — rather than skimming short extracts on screens — your brain changes for the better. You develop the stamina to follow long narratives and complex arguments. All it takes is at least 15 minutes a day.
When we are reading, we are never alone. In the video, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam shares his favourite books and reminds us of the joy and value of reading. From world leaders to everyday readers, their message is the same: reading opens doors, broadens horizons, and connects us to one another. So find your next great read, share it with a friend, and let's keep reading — together.
The Riverside Reading Programme has three pillars: Reading as a School, Reading with Your Class, and Reading on One's Own.
Every Monday, we have a 15-minute Assembly Reading Period in the school hall. Bring a book or educational magazine of your choice — in English during Terms 1 and 3, and in your Mother Tongue during Terms 2 and 4. On Fridays, bring your book to the parade square too. Everyone will be reading together!
Join your class for library visits during EL lessons, explore new titles, and borrow a book or two! These visits are also an opportunity to learn more about the genre of the month or term, browse our New Arrivals and Suggested Reads sections, and get recommendations from our school librarian.
Explore the library on your own, keep a lookout for library activities, and stand a chance to win prizes as a top borrower. Please feel free to approach our school librarian, Ms Su, for book recommendations.
Let's make reading an honoured ritual — not out of obligation, but because it's who we are.
At RSS, reading comes alive in many ways. From students browsing and flipping through books during library visits, to heartfelt reflections written for International Women's Day — our Riversidians bring curiosity, heart, and enthusiasm to every reading experience. Whether it's discovering a new title on display, learning about a person who inspires you, or simply finding a quiet corner with a good book, reading is woven into the fabric of life at RSS.
We believe that every reader has a story, and every story has the power to change us. When we read widely and share what we love, we build a community of curious, empathetic, and thoughtful individuals — and that is exactly the kind of school we want to be.
So come with an open mind, an open heart, and an open book. The library is waiting, and your next great read is just around the corner. 📚
