What is the Riverside Reading Programme?
The Riverside Reading Programme is our school-wide initiative to cultivate a love of reading in every student. It has three components: reading together as a school during assembly, reading with your class during library visits, and reading independently on your own time.
When do I need to bring a book to school?
You should bring a book or magazine every Monday to the school hall before flag-raising, where there is a dedicated 15-minute reading period. On Fridays, bring your book to the parade square as well. Reading on other days is highly encouraged too!
What language should I read in?
This rotates across the school year. In Terms 1 and 3, students read in English (EL). In Terms 2 and 4, students read in their Mother Tongue (MTL).
What kinds of books or reading materials are allowed during the reading period?
You are welcome to read fiction (fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, adventure, mystery and crime, thrillers, romance, humour, and more), non-fiction (history, science, biographies, hobbies and sports, travel, self-help, religion, philosophy, and more), and educational magazines with full prose articles, such as National Geographic, TIME Magazine, Present Perfect, Inspire, and iThink.
Can I read comics, manga, or graphic novels during the reading period?
Not during the reading period, unfortunately. While these are valuable texts in their own right, the reading period is specifically designed to build literacy skills through full prose. You are of course welcome to enjoy them outside of school reading time!
Can I read my Literature set text or other textbooks during the reading period?
No — the reading period is meant for wider exploration beyond the curriculum. It's the perfect opportunity to discover new authors and genres outside of what you study in class. Leave your class texts and Literature books for lesson time.
What happens during class library visits?
During EL lessons, your class will visit the school library together. These visits are a chance to learn about the genre of the month or term, browse new titles, and borrow books to read at your own pace. It's a relaxed and enjoyable way to find your next great read.
I don't know what to read. Where can I get recommendations?
There are a few great places to start. Check out the Suggested Reads shelf in the school library, or browse the NLB discoveReads reading lists curated specially for secondary school students. You can also approach our school librarian, Ms Su, who is always happy to point you in the right direction.
Are there magazines available in school for me to read?
Yes! Spare copies of selected educational magazines will be placed in classrooms for students to borrow. These include titles like National Geographic, TIME Magazine, Present Perfect, Inspire, and iThink.
Are there any activities or incentives tied to the reading programme?
Yes — keep a lookout for library activities throughout the year. Top borrowers at the school library stand a chance to win prizes. More details will be shared by your EL teachers in due course.
What if I forget to bring a book on Monday?
It's always a good idea to keep a book in your bag so you're never caught without one! If you're between books, you can visit the library or borrow a magazine from your classroom to tide you over.
Who can I speak to if I have questions about the library or the reading programme?
Please feel free to approach our school librarian, Ms Su, at the library. You can also check in with your EL teacher for any programme-related updates.
