2019 3EX Pure Literature: Hullabaloo Chapter Summary
- The people of Shahkot tried increasingly ridiculous ways to cure the famine period that was caused by the extreme heat the town was experiencing. From using a musician to draw rain clouds with the music from his flute to using a fan to attract the monsoon clouds.
- Kulfi who unusually got pregnant during famine, was ‘enormously large’ and this shocked people. The baby inside Kulfi moved a lot and grew at a rapid fishlike a ‘little fish’. Kulfi grew hungrier day by day to the point countless meals were not able to satisfy her.
- When Kulfi stole items from their house to get herself food until the market had no more food to sell to her, Mr Chawla ferociously questioned Ammaji, “What have you married me to?”
- Mr. Chawla tried to prepare for the baby by looking for books, enrolling the baby in a school and collected vitamins and tonics. and nagging/advising Kulfi. However, Ammaji had her own ideas about how to deal with pregnancy and she fussed Kulfi around too.
- Out of frustration, Kulfi took a box of old crayons and started to draw on the walls of her house. She drew food which slowly escalated to ‘a parade of cooks beheading goats’, ‘peacocks’, and ‘fish swam beneath the doors’.
- When Sampath was born, the rain came too which signifies the change Sampath will bring. Kulfi was extremely fascinated with the rain as if she was at one with nature and she wanted to escape her social pressure from her family.
- The people of Shahkot were very thankful for the rain as it hasn’t rained for a long time. Rain brought about food/life and an awakening to the people of Shahkot .
- Sampath’s birth was considered as good fortune and he was destined for greatness. Sampath was not very plump or very fair which was the opposite of what Shahkotians appreciate.
- Sampath’s family was extremely inconsiderate as they snored loudly resulting in Sampath not being able to sleep and were all in one single room.
- Sampath decided to take a breather by going up to the roof. Sampath saw aeroplanes and then got jealous of the people who were able to travel and they had more freedom than him. Sampath had always been controlled by the people of Shahkot and he wished that one day, he’d be able to gain his own freedom too.
- Sampath sang a song about meeting a ‘princess’. This shows how desperate and lonely he was.
- Shahkot was messy and dirty as it had ‘rubbish heaps’ flowing all over the town. It was also poorly developed as ‘wires’ were flowing out and the walls were ‘dirty, stained’.
- The people of Shahkot were so chaotic in the morning which made the atmosphere extremely noisy compared to a nature atmosphere which is peaceful and quiet.
- Mr. Chawla began his morning routine with exercises and ‘let his voice fly in triumph’ which was an exaggeration’. He cockily ‘informed the world’ his full name and that he was a head clerk
- Mr Chawla hoped to “inspire his family” by causing a ruckus which made the family thought they needed the entire day to themselves. They were forced to carry out Mr Chawla’s endless demands.
- Mr. Chawla was proud of how he knew the politicians were corrupted but Pinky wanted him to know about local issues like how the Cinema Monkey harassed females for quite a long time without anyone stopping it. Pinky then overexaggerates that she’s afraid to go out.
- Ammaji then suggested that Pinky should take Sampath with her but she feels that he is not strong enough to protect her as he attracts monkeys.
- Sampath was oddly fascinated with fly that was resting on his breakfast. Instead of pushing the fly away because it was on his food, he cautiously observed the fly.
- Mr Chawla killed it as if crushing Sampath’s hopes. He then questioned Sampath where was his common sense as the fly could’ve been from anywhere.
- Sampath is forced to work at the post office by Mr Chawla and Sampath didn’t enjoy his job at all.
- Mr Chawla told Sampath to not complain at work and to abide everything his boss says. Mr Chawla was always constantly trying to force his expectations on Sampath.
- Everyone has a different opinion about Sampath and started quarreling over Sampath’s prospects Ammaji was trying to say that Sampath was just undergoing a phase in his life but Mr Chawla disagrees and states that he had been ‘progressing steadily in the wrong direction’.
- Sampath was like a Potato because he just sat there when his family was all arguing. Mr Chawla thinks Sampath is lazy and not responsible. He also called Sampath ‘peculiar’ which was a resemblance to Kulfi.

- At home, his father and Ammaji are furious about the whole incident, and alternate between questioning him and demanding he find another job immediately.
- Sampath felt dejected. He hated his life.He felt like he's trapped after his family yelled at him.
- Kulfi went to the rooftop where Sampath is sitting. She feels sorry for him as usual and gave him a guava but while touching it, Sampath makes it explode.
- Kulfi offers him an egg instead but Sampath asks for freedom.
- The following day, Sampath's family leaves to attend another wedding, leaving him behind to avoid any embarrassment he could cause at the party.
- As soon as the rest of the family leaves, Sampath runs away from his home, to catch a bus where he rides past the outskirts of his hazy town.
- When an old woman sits next to him on the bus and started a small conversation with Sampath, he feels overwhelmed and jumps out of the bus. The other passengers think that they saw “a monkey man” run into the Orchard.

- Kulfi recklessly cooking in Shahkot “with their tiny kitchen, their meals on the old plastic-covered table” while neighbours criticised
- Kulfi’s unrelentless attempt to steal ingredients as “ingredients that came bottled” were unsatisfying

- Pinky’s typing course took second priority after Sampath’s possibility of becoming rich became apparent.
- Pinky’s dramatic plans on what to wear to town resulting in her looking “as if she were about to enter a fashion show”
- Ammaji being in a good mood as she was about to get her dentures while Pinky sulked along
- Ammaji’s fantastic idea of using “Love Story ‘85” to improve Pinky as she was “so sour and unwilling to talk” to just make herself feel better
- Ammaji felt so uncomfortable with her dentures but the Denture lady reassured Ammaji that “it’s better that they are a little loose”
- Pinky stopping by Hungry Hop Kwality Ice Cream while the Cinema Monkey “grabbed hold her her dupatta”
- Only after Ammaji reminds Hungry Hop Boy, does he then start “ screaming and yelling, waving two sticks in such an alarming manner”
- Ammaji who was annoyed at the Cinema Monkey who stole her dentures, calling it a “stupid donkey” and in the midst of the chase Hungry Hop Boy pauses to correct Ammaji to tell her that the “donkey” she referred to is actually “a monkey, not a donkey.”
- HHB jokes about how she looks like a monkey’s “long lost relative.”
- Upon reaching home, Pinky realises she was “look(s) like a sweeper woman.” then “cried tears of rage” as she blamed her father, Mr Chawla as she thinks it’s his fault because he sent her out “like a servant” and worried that Hungry Hop Boy wouldn’t like her.
- In an attempt to cheer Pinky up, Ammaji with her “fierce curry grin” stunned Pinky with the bright yellow curry stain, even after the chaos earlier. But to no avail, Pink returned to “bawl(ing)” and “crying with a vengeance.”
- Mr. Chawla made improvements to his family’s living arrangements in the orchard, he was extremely proud as they had been forced to relocate to rural surroundings and were not used to do without the town’s comfort.
- Mr Chawla rented out their old house, approached businesses and plans to buy stocks and shares to keep “a careful balance between the look of abstemiousness and actual comfort”
- Mr. Chawla’s ways of profiting included recycling, managing a small cart of offerings for Sampath and buying items he would get “large discount(s)” from so to sell items “at a large profit.”
- The spy from the Atheist Society (AS) asks Sampath a question about God.
- The spy’s background: he was lonely in Shahkot, unmarried, hated his job as a teacher at a public school, hated boys who drew unflattering portraits of him in their notebooks, he sat staring out of the window and smoking cigarettes, he was poverty-stricken, grown up with 11 brothers and sisters, drunken and drugged father, his worn out mother. Ambitions: distinguish himself, the world would turn its attention to him, discover his poise, discussing fluently and with the seriousness of an intellectual. His life had been hard but he would overcome.
- Ammaji keeps boasting how “hard” it was for the family because they kept begging Sampath to “study a little; at least a pass.” The schoolteacher compares Sampath to a sadhu from Rishikesh. Miss Jyotsna had a “terrible trouble” in the post office with Sampath prior to him climbing the tree as he was a lousy worker. If Sampath “would make an attempt,” they would rather him not do anything.
- Everyone enjoys the “pleasant surroundings” which is “clean and pure” as they all wanted to join him even though they thought he was crazy at first. Miss Jyotsna sings a song foreshadowing Kulfi and the spy.
- The spy wonders and plans to investigate Sampath’s “past and a list of all basic information” as he is doubtful of Sampath.
- Kulfi’s attempt to find ingredients took great effort as “she pounced upon (a pheasant) and, without flinching,” she climbed “higher and higher, taking paths made by goats” which were “barely wide enough for her small feet.”
- The goat herders told her to beware of snakes, scorpions and leeches but “she didn’t care.”
- The efforts included collecting lotus stems, raiding bird’s nests, prised open tightly sealed pods, nibbled at the grasses and buds, digging at roots, shaking the fruit from trees returning home with her hair wild and her muddy hands full of flowers.
- Kulfi’s preparation of meals involved slicing, pounding, grounding and smashing, cutting and chopping in a chaos of ingredients and dishes to produce “meals so intricate.”
- Sampath were so satisfied with the meals that he would beg for “More! Please, some more.”
- Kulfi made sure to feed the food to “a chicken” beforehand to make sure it was not poisonous and made sure to always have one chicken as an “official taster” for Sampath.
- The devotees’ “watch(ed) jealous(ly)” at Sampath’s meals as “just one whiff was enough to send them wild.” They hovered about Kulfi greedily peering into the bubbling pots, to draw their fingers through piles of spices on the grinding stone.
- The spy was convinced that the secret of Sampath’s presence, his odd words and antics were to be found in Kulfi’s cooking pot. As he grew more determined and suspicious of the pot, he’d try to sneak past her but every time to no luck even once getting cracked over the head with a broom.
- The Cinema Monkey and his friends arrived and Sampath “ charmed the monkeys” turning them into his bodyguard.
- Sampath advice got stuck in Pinky’s mind and therefore, she realised that “ there was no point for her to drown herself in a bucket of tears” and set off angrily to meet her lover, Hungry Hop Boy.
- When she met him, she was “ filled with a rush of elation and rage” and therefore “ bit him instead” that “ a piece of his ear lay upon the ground”.
- When the police caught her and found out that Pinky was “ the sister of the man who sits up the tree” they quickly apologised and insisted on “ escorting you back to your family” which clearly shows how corrupt the government was. Not only that, the superintendent “ placed his unpleasantly greasy head under Sampaths toes” which also implies that the society is ridiculous. (Feet is considered dirty but they perceive it as something holy instead of silly.)
- Policemen wanted a photograph and that’s when Mr Chawla realised that “ what a market he was missing” and got a photographer who did it for free.
- At the annual meeting of the Atheist Society, the spy kept on talking about Sampath “ for so long, that finally someone from the audience shouted at him and said, “ don’t you think your time is up?” and before he ended off, he said “before the mosquitoes are killed the night is comfortable” without realising that he is repeating things he had heard under the Baba’s tree.
- the monkeys “ found five bottles of rum” which causes the monkeys to be disruptive when Sampath wanted to sleep.
- Yet Sampath decided to defend the monkeys by saying “ what can they possibly know?” as he truly believes that it’s not entirely the monkeys fault but because “ always men are the degenerate ones”
- Then he supports himself by saying how, “ they are only monkeys” as they do not have a brow to think that they are actually consuming alcohol.
- Monkeys’ increasing alcohol addiction made them act in a “ immediate and huexplosive way” that it made them out of control. They grew bolder and bolder that they went “ruffling through the contents of bedrolls, grabbing hold of shopping bags and chasing away the owners”.
- “When (the Monkeys) were chased from their shameless attempt at plunder, they bared their teeth, so the travellers retreated for fear of being bitten”
- Monkeys and Shahkotians were not on good terms as the Shahkotians “retreated for fear of being beaten” because the monkeys “ bared their teeth” due to the unquenchable taste for liquor.

- Sampath told Kulfi about the Hermitage and Kulfi comfort Sampath by saying that she could always poison them.
- The monkeys started stealing alcohol after their first encounter with it and got drunk again.
- Sampath did nothing but admired them as the monkeys rampaged in the kitchen.
- Sampath was confused as his tree was thrashed in fierce chaos and he was tossed here and there, this was all too quick for him to take in.
- The monkeys went back to the university research forest without hurting anyone.
- Mr Chawla decided to take things into his own hands to get rid of the monkeys as things have gone too far.
- The CMO receives news of the monkeys recent exploits while having his morning tea. He becomes worried about the monkey situation in Shahkot, speculating that his ulcers will get worse because of his worrying. He dreads that he 'wouldn't be able to bear all the onion juice he'd have to drink. (Pg 133-134)

- The CMO decides to contact Vermaji, thinking that he would have some 'peaceful ideas to defuse the situation.' As the CMO's calls fail to reach Vermaji, Mr Chawla has doubts about Vermaji's abilities, knowing that Vermaji did not catch a single monkey when he 'set baits filled with sleeping pills to contain the problem at Ranchi'. (Pg 135)
- Vermaji was not reached, rather he was reading the morning papers 'with great interest' and in hopes to test out his theories on the situation in Shahkot and the orchard. His wife however was not fond of these theories and retorted that he would probably get attacked by the monkeys and if not, the Hanuman Monkey Temple would be attacking him instead. Vermaji thought of her retorts as just bizarre humour or childish. (Pg 135-137)
- Vermaji attempts to contact the CMO, hoping to get more information about the 'monkeys' misdeeds' but fails to do so and phones the Brigadier multiple times accidentally. Irritated, he unplugged the phone and decides to go birdwatching from the toilet to soothe and relax himself, looking specifically for a green pidgeon. (Pg 137-138)
- Sadly, he did not find a single bird to help him soothe his irritation and decides to watch his men instead. He shouts at them, which makes them confused, yet he starts to feel better, retiring for his bath

- The Brigadier, Chief Medical Officer and the Superintendent have their own plan in mind in regards to the monkey situation, respectively being to educate his men on truly being in the army, a promotion to get out of shahkot, and not submitting one since he would rather spend his time idling around in Shahkot and spending time with his wife.
- Sampath spends his morning looking through the items that he has collected throughout the time since he first arrived in the orchard while feeling slightly uneasy. Looking through his precious collection of items collected in the tin can , he experiences a wave of nostalgia.
- Sampath was rudely interrupted, being suddenly overwhelmed by the wave of people shouting, screaming all at the same time, which turned distorted and twisted in a scary way in front of sampath, making him question how he truly feels and what emotions is he even experiencing at the time.
- He understood which emotions he was feeling, Happy when he was able to speak out, and sadness or fear when he remains silent.
- Everyone shouting everywhere at this point of time seemed like firing bullets at him as he tries to calm himself down with flowers and leaves.
- He feels rage and close to tears from the treatment that he is getting, he feels used for their own purposes, and threw up at the thought of it, feeling empty and pain.
- Despite throwing up, the visitors were not sorry for what they have caused, and instead blamed each other for arguing against them, and Sampath reminisces the earlier times were things for him were much better, describing it as a love affair before returning to the afternoon’s chaos of the series of arguments between the visitors.
Chapter 20 (Mr. Chen - DC is supposed to be the alternate version of Sampath!)
- Districtor Collector finally arrives and is greeted by a lot of messages and people which confuses him
- DC was shy, thin and weak-looking.
- Shahkot was DC’s first job because “it was not a very big responsibility” and because his father “was an influential officer in the Indian Administrative Service”
- Mr Gupta was DC’s secretary because he felt “deserted by Miss Jyotsna and miserable in the post office”

- DC and CMO met angry businessmen and shop-keepers who were protesting all night outside his bungalow because all of them refuse to revoke their liquor licences but CMO said otherwise the monkeys will carry on being a nuisance and “we will have a whole state of drunken monkeys”
- DC has second thoughts about revoking liquor licenses because “he imagined being alone with Mrs Jyotsna on a moonlight night”
- Crowd chanting adages ‘dab your mouth with honey and you will get plenty of flies” as the DC, Brigadier and Mr Gupta made their way to the CMO’s office which made DC puzzled
- Verma’s plan is not approved because CMO was upset that Vermaji insulted his onion juice and Mr Gupta backed him up by saying “it’s a silly plan, that’s why”
- DC’s cook made “burnt-looking cutlets upon one of the grubbiest plates” which made DC miserable.
- Mr Chawla proposed to “train the army and police as monkey catchers” and it was accepted because the DC thought “surely he would do only what was best for his son”
- DC’s cook hated him for rejecting his cutlets and shot him “a look of withering scorn”
- Mr. Chawla told Sampath about the plan to get rid of the monkeys but Sampath said “I will not live without the monkeys”
- Kulfi thought about cooking a monkey
- Sampath wanted everyone to “take their little minds and leave him to his peace and quiet, to his beloved monkeys” but realised that “he would have to escape/leave”
- Brigadier made his men go through ridiculous training to capture the monkeys. The training consists of exercises that mimics the actions of the monkeys. The brigadier received complaints for being as disruptive as the monkeys
- Police were enjoying themselves preparing nets to capture the monkeys. They don’t know what they’re supposed to do with the resources given to them.
- No one respects Sampath’s boundaries anymore as people ignored his visiting hours and disrupts the peace in the orchard by training and using loudspeakers to yell at each other.
- Sampath is too worried about shahkotians’ plans to capture the monkeys and is unable to sleep or eat.
- Kulfi starts planning a new dish for Sampath so that he can get his appetite back. Kulfi is unsure of what the main ingredient would be.
- Sampath stares at the top of the mountain, and gets jealous that the birds around him were able to live freely
- “Trapped in his room, aunties and sisters keeping watch out of every Window, the Hungry Hop boy paced up and down” because they wanted to get him married quickly.
- HHB smuggled a note to Pinky “via the faithful milkman” to warn her that his family was planning a marriage and he felt excited as his life was “like in a scene from the movies”
- “By the next morning he had a reply from Pinky who did not believe in delays” saying that they should “escape in the Hungry Hop Van and drive far away to a new town” to elope and get married without “his unreasonable family”
- While packing, Pinky felt sorry for her brother as her life was getting better while his was getting worse and invited him to come with her.
- Sampath rejected her offer as he thought his life would go back to before with “endless roads in the endless sticky summer” and “his old life in the post office… of the people milling about him, pushing him, shoving him”
- HHB threw a tantrum until he met Miss Pudding-and-Cake who was “so plump, so pink and white!” even though she “had failed every examination she had ever taken” he fell in love with her.
- HHB felt embarrassed to give in to his family even though he like Miss Pudding and Cake and still felt attracted to Pinky, so on the morning of his elopement, “he drove in circles through the shadowed streets” until he got stuck.
- At 4am in the morning , the District Collector was awake.
- The District Collector was dressed to go to the orchard with Mr Gupta via the government jeep.
- Together with the army as well as the police they were supposed to go on a "sensitive operation" to bring Sampath down from the tree into police custody and capture the monkeys.
- However, at 0405 the driver of the government jeep suddenly braked. This is because the driveway was blocked. "spread out all over, was a huge motley collection of bundles and bed rolls , …" (pg 194) and hear "dreadful banging and clanging, and a loud scraping coming from the servants' quarters because DC’s cook was moving out.
- At the army barracks, the Brigadier got distracted by a green pigeon that reminded him of his mother. He snatched a monkey net from one of his soldiers so that he could capture the bird for his own good. However, his attempt failed and let his anger out on his soldiers which causes them to forget to wait for the DC and Mr Gupta who had to drive quickly to catch up with them.
- However, CMO’s personal items were spread upon the road. Due to the many problems faced, Mr Gupta was frustrated that he would not be able to get to his destination on time.
- The operation was carried out early in the morning as Mr Gupta expected that there will be lack of traffic and obstructions.
- The Brigadier used forms of verbal assault towards the CMO. The Brigadier and Mr Gupta asked the CMO a question each which leads to confusion as they are not sure who is going to move , stay or be in charge.
- The District Collector feels guilty as he feels that it is his fault things are not going as planned and he is beginning to think about how his life would be so much different if he didn't become a DC since he doesn't want his father to feel embarrassed of him.
- They thought of taking a much longer route which means that they would need to carry out the mission another day as it is possible that the monkeys are not in the orchard anymore.
- On their new path, they ran into HHB and his van.
- In the orchard, Kulfi was sleeping near the steaming and simmering pot as she was waiting for one of the animals to fall into it to flavour the gravy. “ she had thought she would somehow, by hook or by crook, direct the fall of one of the animals right into the cooking pot. “ and “ she would drown it immediately away from attention into a delicious gravy. “
- She dreamt of different ingredients that could make the dish taste nicer. “ ‘ A bushel, a drachm, a pint, ‘ muttered Kulfi in her sleep. “ and she suddenly thought of this flower and immediately went looking for it as she passes by the spy, who was awaiting the morning’s drama. “ She must have it, this exquisitely flavoured, graceful, transparent flower that hinted of moss and forest. “
- The spy was anxious for what was going to happen and was curious about what Kulfi was stewing in the cauldron. “ he awaited the dawning of this day that would, he was determined, in the midst of chaos, deliver to him the opportunity he had been waiting for so long: the opportunity to discover exactly what stewed in those cauldrons of Kulfi. “
- Sampath was awake admiring the beauty of the orchard in darkness as “ this impersonal darkness could be comforting as no human attention ever was. “
- HHB was still indecisive over his feelings for Pinky as “ Pinky saw the van appear around the bend… But then, mysteriously, she saw the van turn on to an unpaved farm road and disappear again.“
- The spy clambered up a tree and beneath was where the pot stood. He did that so he could “ watch exactly what was going on. “ He had also planned to take samples as “ in his pocket was his collection of vials and string. “
- HHB got caught by the brigadier and was “ trussed up with monkey nets “ that were supposed to be used for the monkeys but because it was already used, they couldn’t catch the monkeys afterwards.
- Mr Chawla went looking for Sampath, only to find out that the tree was empty as the Cinema monkey picked up the guava and bounded away along with the other monkeys.
- The army, Mr Chawla, Ammaji, theand crowd of devotees, the lazy policemen, Pinky and the Brigadier started chasing the monkeys that was when Pinky started to have feelings for the Brigadier as “ She was filled with an urge to tweak his buttocks. Hadn’t her father told her to set her sights higher than herself, not lower? “
- In the midst of the chaos, Kulfi was busy gathering orchids as suddenly “ people heard: A crack ! A howl ! A watery splash ! “ and above her pot hung a broken branch which meant that Spy had fell in.
