The English Department aims to provide students with a learning environment that develops them to be an engaged 21st century EL learner. To prepare our students for future learning, we will build our students to be:

(a) empathetic communicators, where they are provided more opportunities to discussissues, listen to different perspectives and develop their own opinions.

(b) discerning readers; where they are encouraged to read widely and process information critically

(c) creative inquirers; where they are encouraged to explore ideas, concepts and areas of interest as part of language learning.

Our programmes are carefully designed to provide students with the exposure and experience to multiple contexts and culture for example, through learning journeys, in-house drama programmes and reading and writing packages. Each programme is closely pegged to the various learning outcomes and skills, strategies, attitudes and behaviours (SSABs) aligned to the 2020 English Language syllabus.

The department leverages a variety of learner-centered strategies to equip students with the necessary receptive and productive skills and knowledge of the language. In ensuring that students’ skills are developed progressively across the levels, the department captures ongoing bite-sized information across the four language areas. We believe in providing both qualitative and quantitative feedback to support and guide our students in the acquisition and effective use of the English Language.
