At Innova Primary School, we reaffirm our shared responsibility in keeping Singapore strong. Every year on 15 February, we observe Total Defence Day (TDD) to highlight the importance of protecting our nation’s peace, security, and resilience. This day commemorates the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942 and reminds us of the difficulties our nation once faced, as well as the importance of remaining alert in safeguarding our independence.
In 2026, the theme “Together We Keep Singapore Strong” emphasises that everyone has a role to play in defending the nation, regardless of age. Through a wide range of engaging and interactive activities, students learned about the six pillars of Total Defence—Military, Civil, Economic, Social, Digital, and Psychological Defence. These experiences helped them better understand how they can each contribute to building a secure, united, and resilient Singapore.

2024
In 2024, Singapore celebrated 40 years of Total Defence (TD40), a concept introduced in 1984. This year's theme, "Together We Keep Singapore Strong," underscored the practical application of Total Defence in our daily lives.
At Innova Primary School (IPS), Total Defence Day (TDD) was commemorated on 5 February 2024. The school conducted an assembly programme to reinforce the six pillars of Defence, aiming to raise awareness among students about the importance of maintaining peace and stability. The programme included speeches, powerpoint slide presentation and videos to engage students and deepen their understanding of Total Defence.
Throughout the day, various activities were conducted during Social Studies and Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) lessons. Students learned about the different aspects of Total Defence, including military, civil, economic, social, digital and psychological defence. They also explored the roles they can play in protecting and defending Singapore
As part of the commemoration, IPS conducted a food and water disruption exercise during recesses. Canteen vendors sold simple, meat-free meals to simulate a situation where food supplies might be limited. Students also practiced water rationing by washing their hands from scoops of water in basins, a reminder of the importance of conserving resources during times of crisis.
To enhance the learning experience, the police were invited to showcase their patrol car and shield, providing insights into their roles and responsibilities in ensuring the safety and security of Singapore. This hands-on experience helped students appreciate the efforts of different agencies in upholding Total Defence.
Over three days, students participated in games, craft activities, and crosswords to reinforce their understanding of Total Defence. These activities not only educated students but also made Total Defence Day at IPS engaging and enjoyable. The event successfully instilled a sense of responsibility and commitment to Total Defence among the students, ensuring they are prepared to contribute to Singapore's security and resilience.
2023
Total Defence involves every Singaporean playing a part, individually and collectively, to build a strong, secure and cohesive nation. When we are strong, we are able to deal with any crisis.
On 13th February 2023, Innova Primary School commemorated Total Defence Day. The theme for Total Defence Day this year is “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”. Our students were given the opportunity to listen to a sharing by the Singapore Police Force which elevated their awareness on SGSecure. From another sharing by our teachers, our students were also able to develop a deeper understanding of the six pillars of defence in Singapore and understand how they can contribute to each pillar of defence.
By recognising the importance of Total Defence, our students can play an active role in strengthening ourselves, our community, and our nation.
Activities were planned and conducted during Social Studies lessons and recess time to help pupils understand the importance of their role in defending Singapore. In Social Studies class, worksheets with engaging activities such as colouring, cut-and-paste, and drawing were given to our students. These worksheets successfully injected the joy of learning, thereby enhancing the overall learning experience for our students. Our P6 students were also given the SG Unite! 2.5 card game, which they enjoyed with their classmates, as well as their family back at home too. During recess, posters of different professions were displayed in the English Arcade and students were given the task to complete a worksheet with the information there. The various professions on display were tagged with the pillar of defence that they were associated with. This boosted our students’ awareness of how each profession contributes to Total Defence in Singapore.
For this year’s Total Defence Day, our school has also planned for a water rationing activity for our P3 and P6 students during their recess from 9.30 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. During their recess, water supply from the taps in the canteen was temporarily disrupted. This provides an opportunity for them to appreciate the hardship that our pioneers had gone through during the Japanese Occupation and to remind Singaporeans, especially our youths, about the importance of water-saving habits as water is one of our most precious resources!
2022
Innova Primary School commemorated Total Defence Day (TDD) 2022 on 14 February. This year is the 80th anniversary of that dark chapter in Singapore’s history, the day Singapore fell to the Japanese in World War II. This year is also the 55th Anniversary of National Service.
The theme for TDD 2022 is “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”. We commenced our e-Assembly programme by reiterating the six pillars of Defence to create an awareness in all students to continue to work hard to preserve our present peace and stability. This year, Education and Career Guidance was integrated in the commemoration of TDD. Towards the end of the e-Assembly programme, a video montage of the dreams of our students, was played. It showed the different occupations within six pillars of Total Defence.
On top of that, a series of activities were also planned and conducted during Social Studies, Character and Citizenry Education (CCE), and Physical Education (PE) lessons to help pupils understand the importance of Total Defence and the roles they can play in keeping our nation safe. To create an awareness of the items in the first aid box and to play their part for TDD, the lower primary pupils selected and pasted the correct stickers onto the first aid box template. The middle and upper primary students, on the other hand, penned down their gratitude towards the staff in IPS and the community for what they had done during this pandemic. During PE lessons, students also went through the fire drill practice and the evacuation routes as part of their Outdoor Education Syllabus!
On 15 February, the TDD 2022 video was shown, followed by our Principal, Mr Yee, reading the TDD speech that reaffirmed our commitment, so that together we can overcome any challenge that comes our way and continually keep Singapore safe, secure, and independent.
2021
The theme for Total Defence Day 2021 is “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”. Innova Primary School commemorated Total Defence Day on 8 February 2021 with an e-Assembly programme in which the six pillars of Defence were reiterated to create an awareness in all students to continue to work hard to preserve our present peace and stability. Towards the end of the e-Assembly programme, a video montage – There’s a Part for Everyone, was played. It exhibited on how our pupils and staff had contributed to the different pillars of defence, especially Social and Psychological Defence, by adhering to the safe management measures.
On top of that, a series of activities were also planned and conducted during Social Studies and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) lessons to help pupils understand the importance of Total Defence and the roles they can play in keeping our nation safe. Pupils designed and penned down their reflections on the shields of defence, which were displayed inside or outside the classrooms.
During recess, pupils were served with different menus that resembled the food that our forefathers had during the Second World War. This allowed the pupils to understand the hardship that were experienced during the war and the importance of not wasting food.
On 11 February 2021, our Principal, Ms Winders, read the Total Defence speech that highlighted on how the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic revealed the power of Total Defence.
Through the series of event and classroom activities, pupils were engaged in meaningful and educational activities which allowed them to learn more about Total Defence Day.
