Unconscious Racism: The Psychology and Impacts behind implicit biases and discrimination | SL315
Through our 3 part lesson series, we hope to bring across the idea of what unconscious racism is, and teach others to become more aware about their thoughts and actions. Through the interesting examples that we hope to bring across from case studies, (both in SG and in other countries), we hope that they can see how racist events in the past can impact and alter our mindsets and actions today. We also hope our lesson can allow people to also understand more about why people think like that, and the psychological frameworks that can be used to explain our mindsets. We hope to also incorporate many videos and group discussions to make our module more interesting and interactive, so that we can learn from each other's experiences as well, because this is something that everyone would have experienced in their lives one way or another (if willing). By the end of the lessons, we hope that participants will have a deeper understanding of the subtle yet pervasive nature of unconscious racism and implicit bias.

Documentaries immerse us deeply in the realities of another, and hopefully, change us, and change the world.
Documentaries immerse us deeply in the realities of another, and hopefully, change us, and change the world. This module, a collaboration with NE Council, brings two 2024 Oscars nominated documentaries (with one of them being the winner), and another special documentary curated by the NE Council to HSSLA students. We will be contemplating important questions about power dynamics in the community and global arean raised by these documentaries, and even see possible connections to selected GP essay questions. Students will be expected to participate on Padlet before/after the documentary viewings.

Historically, what knowledge was worth recording? How did humans record it? Why do different languages have different writing systems? Are all languages the same? Are all languages equally capable to expressing thought? If a language has a limitation, what are its ramifications?

In the last session, students will propose a script for an unknown language that they will listen to, based on what they have learnt in the first two sessions. This module will be led by a guest lecturer (and a former student who speaks English, Mandarin, French, and Korean) who is very interested in language, thought and cognition.
