HSSLA aims to cultivate students who are Leaders, Thinkers and Humanists.
Through a series of academic modules for enrichment and partnerships with NGOs and universities, students will expand on the depth and scope of their knowledge of the humanities, and their connection with the sciences.
HSSLA members are also offered leadership opportunities, such as curating their very own SLAM modules (Student-Led Academic Modules), being part of the organising committee of HSSLA's signature school-wide programme, HSSLA NOW!, and to participate in national level competitions to challenge themselves at the highest level.
Also, HSSLA members have the opportunity to take part in the academy’s Overseas Experiential Learning Programme (OELP), to gain valuable insights and understanding of key issues such as globalization, history, environmentalism, culture and current affairs.
At the end of their journey in HSSLA, students are equipped with multi-disciplinary thinking that gives them an edge in university learning and the new economy.
Anica Lo (Class of 2023)
2022-2023 President, HSSLA
Throughout my time in HSSLA, I am beyond grateful to have experienced the myriad of opportunities available such as both participating in and hosting modular activities, learning journeys, schoolwide events, as well as the Overseas Experiential Learning Programme to the United Kingdom.
These experiences have not only built my understanding of the intricacies and relationships between the humanities and the world we live in, but also encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and explore different areas of interests. Of which, I am most thankful towards HSSLA for providing me an opportunity to step up and lead both my team and the academy during my term as the President.
Having had the honour to do so with my exco, I was able to learn how to effectively promote collaboration, ensure everyone’s voices and opinions were heard, and embrace differing perspectives, all of which allowed me to hone my leadership skills and become a better leader for my team and the academy. The freedom and initiative we had in collaborating with our members and teachers in planning, organising and setting the direction for the academy also pushed us to be authentic, creative and purposeful with our activities. It is precisely this freedom and encouraging atmosphere that I cherish most in HSSLA as it promoted a conducive and comfortable environment for myself and members alike to seek new initiatives and achieve personal growth within the academy.
Hence, I will always be grateful towards HSSLA for shaping who I am today and enabling me to have a deeper appreciation and connection with the people and world around us.
“My time in HSSLA can only be best described as fulfilling and enriching. I thoroughly enjoyed the various modules that HSSLA offers, especially SLAM modules because I get to see what topics my seniors and batch mates are interested in sharing!
Beyond the modules, I decided to seize every possible opportunity that HSSLA has back in JC1, from participating as OC in the first ever Humanities Month in 2022 and organising my own SLAM module with my friends, to joining the EXCO and leading the CCA as vice-president in JC2.
It is suffice to say that I grew the most as a person and leader in HSSLA, for that I am thankful for all the opportunities I’ve had. Most importantly, HSSLA has been a safe space for me to explore my interests and passion in the humanities beyond the school syllabus. All in all, HSSLA has been a place where I’ve made countless unforgettable memories!”
Chai Yu Han (Class of 2023)
2022-2023 Vice President, HSSLA
“Beyond an exposure to interesting modules centred on expanding my knowledge of the humanities and social sciences, I am extremely grateful for the many opportunities HSSLA gave me to freely pursue exciting possibilities locally and overseas. For example, my trip to the United Kingdom was particularly thrilling and fruitful in our interdisciplinary examination of the past and present in a foreign country.
Similarly, in an inquisitive exploration of 'diversity' in its physical and social forms, I got to initiate a Student Initiated Learning Journey to a nearby hawker centre for an afternoon of participant observation, altogether equipping me with a more enlightened, humanistic awareness of real-world phenomena.”

“HSSLA has empowered me to be a person with a stronger personality and character. It has enriched my understanding of the world in general. I really appreciate my journey in HSSLA as not only has it broadened my perspectives but also challenged me to think beyond the textbook.”
