Netball may look like a variation of basketball, but it is in fact a unique court-based invasion game that emphasises precision, agility, and strategic teamwork. Developed in the late 19th century, netball has evolved into a globally recognised sport, particularly popular in Commonwealth countries.
Played by two teams of seven players, netball is a fast-paced, non-contact sport that builds fundamental motor skills, spatial awareness, communication, and cooperation. Players are assigned specific positions with defined roles and court zones, requiring discipline and collective coordination to succeed.
At the end of this module, students will be able to play a 4-on-4, half-court netball game, with appropriate rules.Β
Through the term, students will learn the basic skills of the game
Shooting
Footwork
Passing
Defense
The game is won by scoring more points than the opponents. Using a combination of skills effectively, players can influence the outcome of the game together.
As World Netball promotes:
βNetball is more than a game. It is a sport that nurtures confidence, respect, and a sense of belonging β both on and off the court.β
What is Netball?
A sport played by 7 players a side, Netball is the most popular women's sports around the world. Unlike basketball, the movement of a player, with or without the ball, is very restricted and thus the game requires a high level of teamwork and communication for a team to succeed. Netball is a true team sport (as it does not promote ball hogging) which has positions which suits various players of different physical abilities and skill sets.
Once you catch the ball, you must stop and pivot
You cannot take more than one step with the ball
You must pass or shoot the ball within 3 seconds
Physical contact (pushing, bumping, holding) is not allowed
A penalty pass is awarded to the opposing team for contact
You must be at least 3 feet (0.9 m) away when defending a player with the ball
Hands up is allowed, but you cannot block too closely
