Day 2
Geological visit to Yehliu Geopark
Day 2 was all about Taiwan’s amazing natural landscapes. At Yehliu Geopark, we marvelled at rock formations shaped by wind and waves over thousands of years. Everyone had fun spotting the different shapes in the rocks, and we were thrilled to find the famous Queen’s Head and the Princess Head!
Lunch was a real treat: an amazing seafood spread with abalone, clams, fish and prawns. It was a feast, and plates were cleared in no time!
We then continued along the coast to Heping Island Park, where we enjoyed sweeping sea views and more fascinating rock formations up close.
In the afternoon, we made our way up to Jiufen, a charming old mining town perched on the hillside. Its narrow, winding lanes are lined with red lanterns, traditional teahouses and stalls selling local snacks. Many visitors say Jiufen feels just like the magical world of the animated film Spirited Away, and walking through its streets, it was easy to see why!
Our final stop of the day was Shifen, home to one of the most memorable moments of the trip: the sky lantern release. In small groups, students carefully painted their hopes and wishes onto the lanterns. It was heartwarming to read what they wrote. Many wished for good health and happiness for their families, success in their upcoming exams, and lasting friendships with one another. Some even wrote words of thanks to the people who mean the most to them.
Then came the magical moment. Together, we lit the lanterns and watched them rise slowly into the sky, carrying our wishes with them. There were cheers, smiles and a few quiet moments of reflection as everyone watched their lanterns float away. It was a beautiful reminder of the people we love back home, and the perfect way to end a wonderful day!
