A warm welcome from the Mentor Coach Team based at the Academy of Singapore Teachers! We are honoured and excited to journey with you as you take your first step as an Instructional Mentor (IM).
Congratulations on taking on one of the most fulfilling roles in your career as you learn and grow alongside your mentee.
Here, we see our vision which is for instructional mentoring to be an experience that is valued by teachers, KPs and SLs in the school, and proactively sought by all teachers, as a professional learning support to help them deepen their teaching practice.
The Singapore Instructional Mentoring Approach (SIMA) was developed based on literature reviews, professional conversations with our Instructional Mentors (IMs) and Coordinating Instructional Mentors (CIMs), as well as consultations with our Principal Master Teachers (PMTTs) and Master Teachers (MTTs).
Guided by our mentoring mission to support and guide all mentees towards pedagogical excellence, SIMA emphasises three focus areas in Instructional Mentoring, which are to:
“Promote Mutual Growth”, (to remind us that it is a two-way journey where mentee and IMs grow together)
“Build Relationship”, (which is key in ensuring an enriching mentoring experience for all), and
“Localise Mentoring”, (for enhanced relevance to our local education system).
The three processes found within each focus area aim to guide us in achieving our goals.
Welcome to our very first Independent Learning Session (ILS)!
Upon completion of Modules 1 and 2, participants will be able to:
identify the importance of Relationship Building in supporting our mentee’s growth
deepen the use of Instructional Mentoring Language
use protocols and tools that support an effective lesson observation cycle
use evidence and the Co-Assessment tool to co-identify growth areas and set longer-term goals with mentees
For our visual learners, the graphic on the left maps the content that we will be sharing in Modules 1 and 2 to SIMA for your reference.
To help us take care of one another on this learning journey, we would like to highlight five areas where we want to be mindful of in our interactions with one another. Let's try to observe the norms in the infographic as best as we can, be it during our self-paced learning or during our 'live' sessions'!
Dear Participants,
Please feel free to email Mr. Ignatius Lim at Ignatius_LIM@moe.gov.sg or Mr. Matthew Chua at Matthew_CHUA@moe.gov.sg if you have further queries regarding the self-paced lessons or assignments.
Thank you and happy learning!
