In Part 2, candidates are require to write an essay in about 125 -150 words based on the stimulus given. The stimulus contains a situation and three prompts relating to the situation. Candidates must use all the prompts given and give reasons for their point of view.
Essays in Part 2 are usually written in EXPOSITORY / DESCRIPTIVE / PERSUASIVE style.
Expository essays explain a person's point of view on an issue.
Descriptive essays describe people, places, events and things in detail.
Persuasive essays persuades people using strong opinions and evidence on a point of view.
When writing the response, candidates may be asked to:
Explain advantages and / or disadvantages of:
ideas
plans
arrangements
Explain the main points for and against an idea or argument
Express and respond to real or imagined opinions and feelings
Organise, sequence and develop ideas within a text of several paragraphs on familiar and some unfamiliar topics
Advantages: Good things
Disadvantages: Bad things
For an idea or argument: Elaboration that supports an opinion
Against an idea or argument: Elaboration that does NOT support an argument
Express and respond: Give further elaboration based on your own experience or opinion
Organise, sequence and develop ideas: plan an essay by giving your elaboration and reasons, write essay with good structure
Read and understand what is required by the task.
Underline the keywords in the situation given.
Highlight the 3 points required in the prompts.
Note the tense used in the stimulus and the prompts.
Pay attention to the word limit.
Decide on an appropriate style (expository / descriptive / persuasive).
Decide what to write for the introduction. Introductions can be made up of:
General Statement + Definition + Thesis Statement
General Statement + Question + Thesis Statement
Brainstorm for ideas for all the 3 prompts.
Make notes using keywords or in point form.
Provide supporting details / reasons where necessary.
Write in an appropriate style (expository / descriptive / persuasive).
Write a brief introduction.
Write in at least 3 paragraphs.
Begin with a short introduction followed by points for the first, second and third prompts.
Use cohesive devices.
Use the correct tense consistently.
End with a short conclusion.
The structure of your introduction in PART 2 GUIDED WRITING is short and simple.
It is usually around 40 - 50 words only.
