Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains was founded 14 years ago to preserve and protect the treasured historic, cultural, and ecological features of the Blue Ridge in our region. The late Jane Pratt, whose background included working with The Mountain Institute to protect mountains globally by improving the sustainability of their ecosystems and the culture of mountain peoples, helped found and develop FBRM.
One of FBRM’s goals is to encourage local students to become more knowledgeable about the importance of mountains and more involved in protecting the Blue Ridge in our region. This award, named to commemorate Jane and her late husband, Jed Shilling, who took up Jane’s work following her death, is one means of supporting that goal.
