Guests at the Capitol enter the building through the security checkpoint at the "Carriage Entrance" under the south steps, which can be accessed from the sidewalks at the southeast and southwest corners of the building.
(If you climb all the stairs, you will have a great view, but you will be unable to enter the building from there.)
Access additional parking and shuttle information.
Busses are have specific unloading, parking and loading locations at the request of Capitol Facilities and Capitol Police. Please see Map for more details.

Kurt Webb is currently a freshman at Capital City High School, where he participates in several music ensembles, including choir, band, and an a cappella vocal group called Royal Blues. He has five siblings, two of whom have already graduated. Kurt began playing the piano at the age of six with his mother, and when he turned nine, he started taking lessons from Mrs. Houser. Over the years, Kurt has developed a deep love for music and the piano through his studies and practice. He hopes to share his passion for music with others by demonstrating how the piano can bring joy and excitement to those who listen.

Shyla Blume is a freshman at Helias Catholic High School. She started piano when she was 5 years old and has been playing piano for 10 years. Shyla has earned a superior rating for nine consecutive years and has received a gold medal at the state MMTA 3 years in a row. Shyla has a natural music talent and easily meets new challenges head on. Shyla has also played percussion for 4 years and is a member of the Marching Crusaders. Shyla earned the B honor roll her first semester of high school with a GPA of 3.67. Shyla said piano and music is important to her because it allows her to express herself in ways that she often struggles to do with words.

Akshay Chillarige, age 10, is a student of Helen Haynes at Jefferson City Music Academy and has been studying piano for three years and six months. Akshay enjoys playing the piano, though he occasionally faces challenges with complex chords, such as V7 chords. He feels confident performing at his spring and Christmas recitals and is thankful for the support and teachers at Jefferson City Music Academy.

Anderson Naught is in 6th grade at Lewis and Clark Middle School. He has played piano for 4 years. Along with piano he also plays the upright bass in the Lewis and Clark orchestra and soccer is his favorite sport. Anderson likes that Gymnopedia is a duet and that it isn’t too fast.

Sadie is 9 years old, and a third grader at Trinity Lutheran School. She has been a student of Jefferson City's Music Academy since toddlerhood, and has taken piano lessons for the past year under the tutelage of Helen Haynes. Sadie loves learning to play the piano. "Playing the piano is fun. The music is so pretty and it's almost like dancing but with your fingers." She enjoys practicing at home and performing in various recitals.

Evelyn Moore, 14 years old, is a student of Helen Haynes at the Jefferson City Music Academy. She’s been studying for over 3 years and her greatest accomplishment is making sure that all the notes are the correct length, even when it seems like some should be faster. “Piano has really helped me learn to work hard because I had to put in a lot of practice to get where I am,” Evelyn says. She appreciates her mom and dad for pushing her to keep going and practicing even when it was hard and she wanted to stop.

Hadley Dixon, age 10, is a student of Helen Haynes at Jefferson City Music Academy and has been studying piano for 4 years. Her greatest accomplishment on the piano was learning to play the song “Für Elise.”
“It was a long song,” she said. “But after practicing I was able to play it! It felt amazing and I felt talented!”
In preparing for today, Hadley said, “I really enjoy practicing and the recitals!”
Hadley is thankful for the support of her parents, Michael and Emma, her sister Paisley, her brother Oliver and her dog Charli. Also, her grandparents who come to all of her recitals.

Margaret Hayton, age 13, has been studying the piano five years, taught by Helen Haynes at Jefferson City Music Academy. Her greatest achievement at piano has been sticking with the hobby, even as it grew harder, “Sometimes,” she says, “it’s really hard to get myself to practice. But I think about how much I like to play, and how rewarding it feels to learn a new piece, and so I do.” Margaret is thankful for the support from her family, and the love from her two dogs, Basil and Marty.

Parker Johnsen is a Junior at Helias Catholic High School. He is a member of the National Honor Society and maintains a 3.8 GPA while taking both AP and college-level courses through Helias and Lincoln University. Parker is a multi-sport varsity athlete in baseball, soccer, and track, recognized for his mental toughness, resilience and tenacity.
Born and raised in Jefferson City, Missouri, Parker began playing the piano at just eight years old. Although he grew up surrounded by musicians on both sides of the family, the depth of his natural talent and musical ability quickly set him apart. The support he has received from his piano teacher and her lesssons have contributed greatly to his growth Over his nine years of performing, he has earned numberous awards, high ratings and notable accomplishments. However, one of the greatest compliments he continues to receive is his ability to convey emotion through his music -- allowing listeners to truly feel each piece he plays. When asked, this emotional connection is what he values most about the piano.

Ella Johnson is a recent High School graduate (Class of 2025) with a passion for music. As a child, her mom homeschooled her and her sister through Elementary and Middle School. For her High School years, Ella participated in a mix of classes from Capital City High School, Williamsburg Academy, Columbia College, as well as some private education groups.
Ella has shown deep interest in music and the creative arts throughout her life. As of the current date, she has taken 10 years of piano lessons. “Piano”, Ella stated, “has opened doors to social connection for me by creating opportunities to talk about and create music with other people I otherwise wouldn’t have met. It has also become somewhat of a sacred space for me, somewhere I can find solace and express any emotion I may be feeling.” Music has helped Ella in her personal life to deal with stress and anxiety and she would like to share those benefits with others by studying to become a music therapist in college.

Helen Haynes started teaching piano lessons in college (many years ago!). She started Haynes Piano Studio, which evolved to Haynes Music Studio in 2005, and into Jefferson City Music Academy in 2012. She enjoys teaching students of all ages, including adults. She specializes in beginners to intermediate. She also owns and manages Jefferson City Music Academy, where there are multiple teachers, who offer lessons in voice, drums, guitar, and ukulele, in addition to piano, and Early Childhood Music and Motion classes (also taught by Miss Helen).

Jan Houser loves teaching piano to all ages, but especially enjoys helping intermediate and advanced students. Piano teaching is her calling. Her students have received awards and honors and many have continued in the music profession. She is certified by the Music Teachers National Association which honored her as a Foundation Fellow and holds music degrees from the University of Indianapolis and Ball State University and a certificate from the Ecole d'Art Americaines, Fontainebleau, France. She began teaching at age 16 [long ago] and has taught continuously ever since.....in Indianapolis, Dayton, OH, Jefferson City and on the faculties of the University of Missouri-Columbia, William Woods University, Wright State University and Miami University of Ohio. She is the Director of Music at Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she plays piano and organ and directs the adult choir and is the pianist for the Jefferson City Cantorum. She is a co-founder of the Mid-Missouri Area Music Teachers Association which she served as president for two terms as well as state president for the Missouri Music Teachers Association which honored her as "Teacher of the Year". She has been the music director/pianist for many Jefferson City Little Theatre musical productions. She and her soul-mate, Dr. Steven Houser, LU Professor Emeritus, share woodwind/piano duets nearly weekly at Our Savior's. She is particularly attached to her musical black cat, Eddie Dolce.

Tell your story! Each time one of our decision-makers learns about the hard work of your students and their teachers, we build a bridge that can support arts-friendly future decisions.
If you have a specific "ask" prepare a document (letter, note, card, flyer) and leave it with them.
Suggested asks:
Restore core funding of $10.1M to the Missouri Arts Council,
Restore funding of $1M for MO Humanities
Fully fund the Missouri Academies for $1.1M to eliminate economic barriers for students with limited financial means. (MO Academies of MO Scholars Academy and MO Fine Arts Academy share a line item in the state budget)
Take a picture of the legislator with members of your group.
