In our final year of Elementary General Music, we touch on new material such as Major and Minor diatonic scales, key signatures, a chord functions, but largely take everything we've learned up to this point and apply it to larger creative projects. Students learn piano keyboard for the first time, and wrap up with a large 12-Bar Blues unit before they dive into their own personal 5th Grade Project where they choose what to practice, prepare, and perform.

5th Grade Personal Project
All 5th Graders perform at the Evening of the Arts in the spring.
Evening of the Arts is an open house event joining the art and music departments at Russell. In addition to the artwork of all grades being displayed throughout the building as an open exhibit, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students perform some musical excerpts throughout the evening in the gym.
5th Graders also typically perform a song as part of their 5th grade graduation ceremony.
5th graders have the opportunity to join Russel Cub Choir, Russell Band & Orchestra, and Marple Newtown Elementary Select Ensembles. See those pages for additional details
