In 1st grade we build on the foundational skills from Kindergarten. We introduce our first rhythms: quarter note ("Du"), 8th notes (Du-de), and rest. We sing our first solfege pitches, "so, mi & la" and learn how to read them on a musical staff. We apply this information to singing, games, and start to introduce our xylophones.

1st Grade's yearly performance is at "1st Grade Family Music Night" in the spring.
Family Music Night is a night for parents and guardians to get a glimpse into the music classroom. Adults are encouraged to join in on some of the games, activities, and lessons we learn in 1st grade music class. The evening's grand finale is the students performance, often singing folk songs, international or culturally significant songs, and one or two just for fun.
