Investigate and demonstrate the first aid required to treat a number of common conditions
I should be able to outline the steps and equipment required to give first aid to a patient based on the scenarios below
Working in pairs, one individual will assume the role of the patient, while the other will act as the first aid responder. Together, you will address each of the following first aid scenarios.
Identify the most likely cause requiring first aid intervention.
Administer the appropriate first aid to the patient using the available first aid equipment.
Utilise the contents page in the first aid manual or refer to the St John Ambulance website to enhance your understanding of how to manage each specific situation.
Marine First Aid Scenarios
First Aid Scenario Number 1
You and a friend are exploring some rockpools at the beach on low tide. Your friend suddenly lets out a cry of shock and pain. You quickly go over and see a blue ring octopus in the rockpool and your friend is clutching their hand.
First Aid Scenario Number 2
You and a friend are swimming in the surf at Newcastle Beach. You both dive under a wave, but when you come up your friend has a blue bottle tangled around their neck.
First Aid Scenario Number 3
You and a friend are wading through some shallow water fishing at Tanilba Bay. Your friend steps on a stingray and is stung in the calf. The stinger remains in the calf.
First Aid Scenario Number 4
While surfing at Bar Beach, you see your friend catch a large dumping wave. They are driven head first into the sand and come up in the shallows complaining of neck pain and a tingling sensation in their limbs.
First Aid Scenario Number 5
While swimming at a local beach your friend is attacked by a shark and has their left leg bitten off below the knee.
First Aid Scenario Number 6
You and a friend are jumping from boat to boat and your friend looses their footing and is screaming in agony. It appears that they have broken their right ankle.

While having a picnic with a group of friends at Nobby's foreshore, you notice one of your friends start to cough and gag, point to their throat, they start to wheeze, can’t talk and begin to turn blue.
First Aid Scenario Number 8
While spearfishing with a friend off Susan Gilmore, you accidentally shoot them above the right knee. The spear penetrates deeply into the thigh and protrudes out the opposite side.
First Aid Scenario Number 9
You and a friend are cleaning your fish after a fishing trip at Stockton boat ramp . Your friend slips with a very sharp knife and cuts the top half of their left little finger off.
First Aid Scenario Number 10
While exiting the water after a snorkelling trip at Fly Point Nelson Bay, your friend failed to remove their fins, trips and hits their forehead on a large rock. They are not unconscious but are very dizzy, complaining of pain and there is a large contusion on their forehead.
First Aid Scenario Number 11
You and some friends are in a boat heading out to sea on a diving trip. While crossing the bar at Swansea channel, the boat hits a large wave and one of your friends fall and comes down hard on their left arm. When they stand up their left arm sagging down and forward at the shoulder, they cannot lift their arm due to the pain and there is a grinding sensation if they attempt to raise their arm.
First Aid Scenario Number 12
On your way to the beach for a surf you are going down the track at Onemile Beach when you feel a sharp pain on your ankle. Your friend behind you says they saw a brown snake disappear into the bush near your foot. You begin to feel sick and want to vomit.
