Family Cheetah Tracks

November 11, 2025
Dear JES Families,
As we make our way through November, our Cheetah community is embracing this season of gratitude!
To kick off the month, we gathered for an All School Assembly focused on Gratitude, where we read Gratitude Is My Superpower by Alicia Ortego and launched our school-wide gratitude project. Together, we’re reflecting on the many reasons, big and small, that make us proud to be Cheetahs.
This week also brings our November Farm to School Taste Test, featuring The Farm Upstream’s Koginut Roasted Squash with maple syrup. We can’t wait for students to try this delicious local treat!
We’re also thrilled to celebrate another milestone, our second All School Celebration for filling our Cheetah Spots Bin. Next Thursday, we’ll enjoy Pizza on the Playground, a well-earned celebration recognizing students’ commitment to following classroom expectations and agreements.
There was much excitement today about the first snow of the season! Students were full of joy during outdoor play, and I was once again reminded just how great it is to be a Vermont kid. As the weather turns colder, please make sure your child comes to school with proper winter attire, warm coats, hats, gloves or mittens, snow pants, and boots, so everyone can stay cozy and have fun while enjoying outdoor recess and activities.
Throughout the building beautiful art and student work reflects our ongoing goal of nurturing a strong sense of belonging for every learner. In classrooms, students are diving into research projects as part of our second literacy units while continuing to build their foundational math skills, and deepening their critical thinking skills.
At the end of this week, we will conduct our November Safety Drill, which will be a Lockdown Drill. This year, MMUUSD elementary principals have adopted a trauma-informed, discussion-based approach to these drills. You can find more details below, including the script we’ll be using. We practice these Options-Based Response Drills twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, to ensure that all students know how to respond safely and calmly in an emergency.
Looking Ahead:
No School for Students: November 24–28
As we move through this season of gratitude, we pause to reflect and celebrate all that we’re thankful for, especially our amazing Cheetah community. Thank you for your continued partnership and support. I am grateful to be leading this truly special school community!
Warmly,
Katie Barea
JES Principal

JES Snow Motion Is Coming Soon!
The Snow Motion Program at Cochran’s Ski Area is a part of the PE curriculum that takes place as a series of field trips to learn how to ski or snowboard. All JES students participate.
Snow Motion's mission is "to provide local youth the opportunity to learn to ski and snowboard during the school day at no cost."
Snow Motion field trips are fully inclusive and occur as part of the school day. Students are provided free transportation, rental equipment, lift tickets, and ski/snowboard lessons.
This week, all families will receive a Snow Motion questionnaire that assists us in setting up all the equipment needed to run the program. As always, we will be looking for as many volunteers as we can. Please consider volunteering your time if you are able to!
Thank you for your continued support!
Lost & Found Donation Cycles
We will be donating all items from the JES Lost & Found two times during the 2025-2026 school year. Once over December break and once in June. Please stop by JES and peruse our Lost & Found to see if any of your child's items can find their way home.
November Safety Drill
Options Based Response Lock Down Drill
Here is the script teachers will be using during our discussion based drill this week. The script emphasizes the importance of students listening to teacher directions in the event of an emergency.
The safety of students and staff is our first priority. Therefore, the Mount Mansfield Unified Union (MMUUSD) schools follow the protocols and procedures contained in the current edition of the Vermont School Crisis Guide as well as VT Agency of Education safety requirements. Additionally, based on guidance and recommendations from the Vermont School Crisis Team, Vermont School Safety Center, FBI and US Department of Homeland security we will take an options-based approach to safety, i.e. Run/Hide/Fight. This methodology does not replace current safety protocols for evacuation, sheltering in place or other emergency response procedures, but does give additional tools that may be used to respond to an active threat. You can find a link to the Run/Hide/Fight protocol on the Homeland Security website here.
We have learned that no one size response plan fits each incident and teachers, administrators and students need to have options so that they can effectively respond based on a specific set of circumstances. We will be practicing option-based drills during the school year in a developmentally appropriate manner in order to minimize anxiety for students. While the very unexpected nature of a crisis may make preparation difficult, MMUUSD believes that staff and students should be ready to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. School violence and other emergency events can be difficult to discuss and consider, but we must do our best to be prepared. Each option based drill will be announced to parents/caregivers no later than one day prior to the drill being conducted.
Our Emergency Response Plan provides a comprehensive framework for school emergency crisis management. It addresses the roles and responsibilities of town and school organizations and provides a link to local, State, Federal, and private organizations and resources that may be activated to address school emergencies in the supervisory union. These plans are evaluated regularly by our Crisis Response Team and follow all state and local guidelines.
Important details about the Emergency Response Plan:
The safety plan is not public information and copies will not be given out. Parents can be notified of the plan and some of the details, but specific parts will remain confidential for the safety of students and staff.
The safety plan was designed to be similar at all MMUUSD schools. This was done for the following reasons:
a) Responding police officers will have a general knowledge of how the plan works regardless of what school they respond to.
b) Substitute teachers and other district employees who move from school to school will also have a basic knowledge of how the plan works no matter where they are.
3. The safety plan is under constant refinement and will change as situations change or potential threats are determined.
4. While no safety plan can deal with all possible dangers, and while no safety plan can guarantee the safety of everyone involved, it has been shown that having a plan in place and practicing for potential emergencies helps ensure the safety of the students and staff. Further, it supports smooth operation in the event an evacuation is necessary.
Included with this letter is a guide that outlines the following:
1. When And Why Are Students and Staff Asked to Lockdown, Lockout, Shelter-in-Place, or Evacuate
2. Parent Responsibilities During a School Emergency and Reunification After a School Emergency
3. Safety Terms and Procedures
4. How You Will Be Reunited With Your Child
5. How Parents Can Help
6. Recommendations If a School Emergency Occurs
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

MMUUSD Grades 3-12 Belonging Survey
All students in grades 3-12 will be provided an online survey this week related to their sense of belonging in school. This brief (four question) online survey aims to collect data on student sense of belonging to inform our efforts to better support student well being. If you would like your student to opt out or if you have any questions, please connect with the principal of your child's school.
NEWS FROM JES PIE
Partners in Education is an organization whose purpose is to enhance and strengthen the educational and social environment for the Jericho Elementary School students.
No Fundraiser Fundraiser
PIE used to host multiple fundraisers throughout the year in order to fund our efforts for the school. Last year, we switched it up and just asked for donations instead and it worked! We’re doing the same this year and we need your help! Our goal is $8,500 which comes to around $30 per student.
