It is ESSENTIAL that third and fourth graders practice their multiplication facts at home to build fluency and confidence in math. Students should be able to say the answer to a multiplication fact in three seconds or less. Knowing these facts automatically is a critical skill that allows them to solve more complex math problems efficiently. Regular practice at home is NECESSARY to reinforce what we are learning in class.
Here are some great ways to practice:
🔢 Use the Math Facts app for quick and engaging practice! Download it here
🎲 Play multiplication games with flashcards or dice. Here are some ideas
📝 Print and use flashcards at home.
🎤 Challenge your child to a multiplication fact race against you or a sibling
🎶 Watch or sing along to multiplication fact songs
A few minutes of practice each day makes a huge difference! Thank you for your support in helping your child strengthen this essential math skill! 🎉
Health Room Update
Nurse Tara has been coming to classrooms to teach various health topics. Here are some things she has been teaching:
Germs
The students learned about different types of germs. The students also learned how germs are spread and how to prevent the spread of germs. We spoke about the importance of not touching other people's blood. Please see this handout for additional information. What Are Germs_ (for Kids) — Print Version - Nemours KidsHealth.pdf
The students learned about the importance of protecting their skin while outside in order to prevent skin cancer. Please see this handout for additional information. How to Be Safe When You're in the Sun (for Kids) — Print Version - Nemours KidsHealth.pdf
The students learned about the importance of tick bite prevention.
The best way to prevent tick bite illnesses is to prevent tick bites.

Hello All -
It's hard to believe, but UCS will soon be starting the process for class placement for the 2025-2026 school year! This is pertaining to any child entering grades 1-4 for next SY. The goal of the placement process is to honor your child's unique strengths and needs as a learner, and to create balanced classrooms in which all students can be successful and learn from one another as dynamic individuals. Your participation in this survey gives us important, key information for determining placement. We thank you in advance for your thoughtful participation.

Our goal is to expose 2nd-4th graders to mountain biking to develop safety and technical skills, build confidence, have fun, and gain an appreciation for the great outdoor resources right here at UCS.
Each participant is required to have a bike in working order, a helmet and water bottle. If your child would like to participate and any of these are a barrier, please contact Nick Tanner at KidsOnBikesVT@gmail.com – the goal is to get every kid on a bike who wants to ride.

Current Curriculum Units
We are learning about the geography of Vermont. We will explore its geographic features and how they affect its residents. We will also explore what features make Vermont unique and what it is known for.
The Focus Questions for this unit are:
What are Vermont's geographic features?
How do they affect its residents?
What do different maps tell us?
Which Vermont features make it unique?
What are Vermont's 14 counties?
Our current unit focuses on understanding the meaning of fractions as numbers and as equal parts of a whole; reasoning about equivalent fractions; comparing fractions; and using notation to model fractions and fraction relationships. Students build their knowledge of fractions and fraction equivalents as they represent and compare fractional quantities, including fractions greater than one, with pattern blocks and on the number line.

This unit focuses on understanding the meaning of fractions and decimals; and comparing fractions and decimals including finding equivalents. Students use contexts and representations such as rectangles (an area model) and number lines (a linear model) to add, subtract, and multiply fractions.

Third and Fourth Graders have been busy learning how to identify the main idea and supporting details in informational texts, helping us become stronger readers. We are also practicing responding to texts using the R.A.C.E model (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain) to support our thinking with evidence. In writing, students are working hard on their informational books, researching and organizing facts about a topic of their choice. Additionally, we continue to practice writing in cursive, building fluency and confidence in this important skill. It’s wonderful to see students developing their abilities in reading, writing, and handwriting each day!
