SOPHIA GUM AND ISABELLA KIRLANGITIS
“Looking Towards Green” pulls away from the traditional grid layout seen throughout Alexandria to opt for a more natural inspired radial pattern. Maintaining prominent sightliness through to the Washington Monument of downtown D.C. capitalizes on the proximity to Washington D.C. and offers a unique perspective. The design compliments the big idea while enforcing long term sustainability.

BUILDING AND ZONING
Our goal was to create a "bowl" strutcutre with our building heights, while still focusing on the view of the monument. We also wanted the residential apartments to be able to have a great view of our "raindrop" main area.

SECTIONS
The implementation of green infrastructure, open green space, and the encouragement for pedestrian and public transport options is heavily enforced in our design. Homage is paid to the Potomac River through topography manipulation in the green center, while building heights are careful considered to block harsh winds from the North-West and optimize year round sun potential.
SMALL AREA PLAN VIEW
We thought it would be interesting to incorporate "rain droplet" topography in the middle of our site with a curved pavillion. The topography could be used as seating while there are events at the pavillion, or imaginative play for children.
