What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
CASEL defines social and emotional learning (SEL) as "an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions".

Supporting Students with Social Emotional Needs
The Intermediate Unit has SEL teachers that can help provide support to your students!
One of our teachers, Jake, says this, "As a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) teacher I work to support the process by which students develop fundamental emotional and social competencies and experiences. I work with students on how to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. I center my work on the five core competencies: Self-Awareness, Self- Management, Social Awareness, Relationships Skills, and Responsible Decision making. Social Emotional Learning uses evidence based curricula (based on the CASEL framework) to address student needs. I work closely with the Guidance Department, administrators, special educators, and classroom teachers to ensure students are receiving the services they need to promote a positive educational experience."
