Q & A
A behavior coach is someone who is contracted through Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV to help support teachers as they work to help students with behavioral needs. Student specific or whole classroom observations are the options for coaching services.
A variety of recommends are made that specifically fit the needs of individual students, teachers, and classrooms. We focus primarily on a proactive approach to managing behaviors and providing rewards for displaying those behaviors.
Q: Are there qualifications that need to be met in order to work with a certain student?
In order to have a student specific behavior coach services a signed parent permission slip is required. The behavior coach will hold a pre-meeting, two 3 hour observations, and a post-observation meeting. Up to two follow up visits are also offered.
Q: Who can make a referral?
Teachers and administrators are able to make referrals for behavior coach services.
While services can be requested at any point, often a variety of interventions are attempted prior to scheduling a consultation. Having additional data to provide to the behavior coach is helpful in knowing what has and has not been sucessful for the student or classroom.
The behavior coach will primarily meet with the educational staff, however, parents are invited to attend post-observation meetings to review the information collected and recommendations made.
After the post-observation meeting, two follow up meetings are offered. During these follow up visits, the behavior coach will observe, help implement strategies, and provide coaching to the staff.
