High Tech AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) includes dedicated communication devices that require software to run. High tech AAC may be accessed in a variety of ways: touch, eye gaze, scanning or with a switch. AAC devices are used to express the student's needs/wants as well as to access communication for curriculum.
High Tech AAC and the Classroom
Students may be able to use their high tech AAC device in a diverse manner. They may use the device to communicate, respond to questions, socialize with peers and participate in classroom activities. The device can be used for writing through the keyboard page and word prediction.
High tech AAC devices come with a variety of vocabulary options. Some of these options include Touch Chat, Snap Core First, LAMP and Proloquo2Go. All devices come with the ability to modify and customize vocabulary. AAC device use is similar to learning a new language- it must be taught to be used effectively. Modeling is a key component to learning to use the AAC device for communication.
