For the beggining of this term, our Humanities unit focuses on Victorian Aboriginal Nations and Languages. Students will be learning about the rich cultures and histories of Aboriginal communities across Victoria.
This week, we’ll begin by practising words from the Woiwurrung language, spoken by the Wurundjeri people, and exploring how language connects to Country and identity. Students will also have the opportunity to draw traditional Aboriginal symbols and learn about the meanings they hold in storytelling and communication.
In Health this week, students are revisiting Friendology and exploring what makes a healthy friendship. Using the Friend-o-meter, we’ll be identifying the differences between healthy (green zone) and unhealthy (red zone) friendships.
Students will reflect on the qualities of green zone friends, those who are kind, respectful, and supportive, and discuss why it’s important to spend more time with people who help us feel our best.
This week in Reading, students will be exploring two new sounds: '_y' as in puppy and '_ey' as in key. We will also be learning how adding the suffix ‘y’ to words can turn them into adjectives. These are describing words that tell us more about nouns.
Our new tricky words for the week are kind, find, and thought.
Over the next fortnight, we’ll be looking at the story The Day the Crayons Quit. Our comprehension focus will be on predicting, as students use clues from the text and illustrations to make thoughtful guesses about what might happen next. We’ll also build our vocabulary by exploring the words gorgeous, congratulate, and prove.
In Writing this week, students are beginning to explore information texts and the features that help readers understand and locate facts. We’ll be learning about key elements such as headings, diagrams, images, photos, and glossaries, and how each one supports our understanding.
Students will also be learning the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts and discovering how a contents page can help us find information quickly and easily.
In Maths this week, students are revising their Friends of 10 facts and practising quick recall to help solve near-10 facts using domino games and hands-on activities.
We are also exploring 2D shapes, learning to name, identify, and describe a range of two-dimensional shapes by looking closely at their sides and corners. It’s been a fun week of building number confidence and shape knowledge!
