Reading:
In Reading, we have been learning about 'verbs' and acting them out. We have also learnt two new digraphs 'ee' (tree) and 'ea' (leaf), as well as the tricky words: who, many, any.
Writing:
In Writing, the students have begun their narrative story! This includes a 'sizzling start', problem, solution and ending. Students will also be publishing these pieces for their 'Writer's Gift'!
Maths:
In Maths, students have been loving our new topic of Addition! We’ve been applying our newly learnt skills of counting fowards and backwards from a number and applying these in game settings.
Health:
In our Friendology lesson, students are exploring 'Tricky Situations' and when it is appropriate to say "No". One example includes saying 'No' to sharing food.
We are also celebrating the completion of the Friendology program, and reflecting on what we have learnt this term. Students will be bringing home a special Friendology certificate!
Student Voice:
In Week 9, the Grade 1 Student Voice Leaders were invited to respond to a series of questions from their teachers, giving them an opportunity to share their thoughts on their learning for Term 2. They represented their peers by providing feedback on what should be ‘kept’ and what could be ‘changed’ for the upcoming term.
Inquiry:
A big congratulations to all Grade 1 students on a fabulous end to our 'Ancient Egypt' Inquiry Unit. Students had so much fun showcasing their hard work on the open afternoon. Check out their amazing pieces!
Harmony Day was such a joyful celebration for our school! Students loved embracing their cultures, sharing their traditions, and celebrating what makes each of us unique. They were especially excited about their performance and did an amazing job, showing confidence and pride.
Reading:
This week in Reading, we have been learning to read two-syllable words with a VC/CV syllable pattern. We have also learnt two new digraphs 'ay' (play) and 'ai' (rain), as well as the tricky words: your, again and home.
Writing:
In Writing, the students have begun planning their narratives! We’ve chosen our characters and are coming up with pricky problems and enticing endings!
Maths:
In Maths, students have been loving our new topic of Addition! We’ve been learning the strategy of “counting on from the bigger number” and using it to solve two-digit addition problems.
Health:
In our Friendology lesson, students explored the term “friendship fires.” We talked about how these are small problems between friends that can grow if we don’t take care of them. Together, we practised ways to “put out the fire” by being kind, talking things through, and asking for help when needed.
Reading:
This week in Reading, we are learning what 'compound' words and 'nouns' are. We are continuing to practise our tricky words: saw, friend, school.
Writing:
In Writing, we have been focusing on narrative stories! The students have had so much fun discussing 'characters' and 'settings'. We’ve been exploring how our favourite books and shows need fun and dynamic characters and settings to make a story interesting.
Maths:
In Maths, students have been racing to make towers to 20 and 120! We are working on renaming numbers using tens and ones. We are also exploring units of time (minutes, hours, days, months, years) and when to use each.
Health:
In Health, students have been exploring the Friend-o-meter from Friendology and what makes a friendship healthy.
Reading:
This week in Reading, we are revising the sound ‘ng’ (as in swing) and continuing to practise our tricky words: some, where, should, would, could. Students are reading and writing words with these digraphs, building their confidence in both reading and spelling.
Writing:
In Writing, we have been focusing on all things characters! The students have had so much fun discussing their favourite characters from a range of books. We’ve been exploring adjectives and different ways to describe characters. The story The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson was a highlight and a great resource for describing characters in detail.
Maths:
In Maths, we are continuing our Place Value journey. Students have been making bundles of ten, building towers, and learning to say two-digit numbers using the language of tens and ones. We’ve also been noticing patterns in numbers, including the “t” or “ty” pattern (for example, 63 = sixty-three).
Health:
In Health, students have been exploring Friendship Facts from Friendology:
No friendship is perfect.
Every relationship is different.
Trust and respect are important.
Friendships change, and that’s okay.
Reading:
This week in Reading, we are reivising sound th’ (thumb, feather) and learning the sound 'oo' (moon, book). Students are practising reading and writing words with these digraphs. We are also learning our tricky words: here, what and want.
Writing:
In Writing, we have been focusing on writing about the things that we love. We have been creating 'Heart Maps' that will inspire our writing. We have also been looking at simple editing skills.
Maths:
In Maths, we have been focusing on Place Value. We have been counting forwards and backwards by ones from a given number to at least 120, looking at place value patterns and number sequencing.
Health: Students have been learning about strategies for making new friends, including how to introduce themselves and ask a friend to play.
Incursion: CYBER SAFETY
On Tuesday morning, we were lucky enough to have the Kiya and Jack from The Cyber Safety project come to our school and chat to use about 'switching off' and ways we can can look after our wellbeing.
Reading:
This week in Reading, we are learning the sounds ‘sh’ (shell), ‘wh’ (whale) and ‘th’ (thumb, feather). Students are practising reading and writing words with these digraphs. We are also learning our tricky words: then, there and they.
Writing:
In Writing, we have been focusing on writing about special memories. Students have been drawing detailed pictures of their memories and using these to help them write simple sentences. We have also been writing about our cultural celebrations, which links beautifully with our Inquiry unit on Family.
Maths:
In Maths, we have continued practising subitising larger sets of numbers using our “superhero eyes”! Students have been using tens frames, mini whiteboards and even Pokémon characters to help them see numbers rather than count them one by one.
Health:Students have been talking about feelings and linking them to colours. We have been learning ways to calm down when we experience tricky or negative feelings.
Reading: This week we are revising the terminology: consonant, vowel and phoneme and learning to read and write using these. We are also revising the digraphs 'ff', 'll', 'zz' and 'ck'.
Writing: This week we are discussing what makes a good writer and brainstorming ideas to write about.
Maths: In Maths this week, students have been using their superhero eyes to subitise sets of numbers!
Health: In the ‘Friendology’ program this week, we are learning that there are ups and downs in friendships and identifying ways to treat yourself like a best friend. This includes resting when tired, listening to music or go for a bike ride.
Over the first 7 days of school, the students in Grade 1 have been spending lots of time getting to know one another and their teacher.
We have been spending time learning about our school values, class expectations and earning Mitchcoins!
Grade 1s have been on a school tour, created door displays and talked lots about our holidays.
