STEM Outreach and Student Programs
Below is more information about the outreach and student programs I have been involved in, organized by institution I was employed by at the time of involvement.
Programs
Missouri Western State University
Super Science Saturday - Faculty volunteer for the Math Maze Activity. This is a community outreach event hosted by Missouri Western on a yearly basis.
MathCounts - Campus Host for the North West Chapter Program. Program Coordinator: John Modlin, Benedictine College. This is a national middle school math competition, which takes place on a yearly basis.
Rockhurst University
Mathapalooza: Mathapalooza is the Rockhurst University Math outreach program. Run by the department chair, Dr. Zdeňka Guadarrama, the program works with local schools, student organizations, and other outreach programs to offer hands on mathematics activities for students in K-12. Mathapalooza just celebrated its 10th anniversary in March 2022. I volunteered as an assistant at on and off campus events over my two years at Rockhurst.
Arizona State University
Sonia Kovalevsky Day - After starting at ASU, I connected with the ASU West Campus for their annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day. I was a panel speaker for two years, and an activity leader for another two years before I graduated.
ASU Math Day: I was an activity leader in 2018 and 2019 for the ASU Math Day event. I led students through an activity on the card game SET, and helped with set up, clean up, and coordinating with the guest speakers throughout the day.
Cryptorally: I was a volunteer in 2018 and 2019 for the cipher-solving competition Cryptorally, assisting with the verification of answer submissions at the final check point.
California State University, Fresno
Sonia Kovalevsky Day Organizer and Activity Leader - Before starting my junior year at Fresno State, I was recruited by Carmen Caprau to join an all female research class funded by an MAA Tensor Women in Mathematics grant. In addition to taking this class, and working on research for the years following the course, I also became one of the founding organizers of the Fresno State Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day. The goal of that event is to encourage local high school girls to continue studying STEM, and to show them the options available as math majors. I was an organizer and activity host for this event for my final three years at Fresno State.
The Downing Planetarium - For 5 years, I was an assistant at the Downing Planetarium, helping out with the school groups that would visit the Planetarium and Museum. While I am not a physicist, I did learn a lot during my tenure there, and could probably still answer questions if you happen to find me during a solar eclipse. This job was my first job in STEM education, and if you find yourself in Fresno I highly recommend looking up their schedule to see a show.
