Story Summary
_______________________________________
Chloe Chase and Ahnisti Long (pronounced “honesty”) , now high school sophomores, have been best friends since the fifth grade. Despite the challenges of changes at home, teenage self-discovery and an ever-expanding list of extracurriculars, two things remain constant in their lives — each other.
The two teenagers do nearly everything together — marching band, theater club, quiz bowl, Girl Scouts, and more. The only things that seem to separate them are the classes they don’t share and the beds where they sleep. “Ahnisti drags me along with her everywhere — in the best way,” Chloe joked.
The two haven’t always been this close. Their friendship has waxed and waned over the past six years, but Chloe and Ahnisti have always found their way back to each other. “She’s been sweeter than ever — except when she’s not,” Ahnisti teased. “But I love her though.”
Ahnisti Long, 16, left, and Chloe Chase, 15, tease a scam caller on the phone in Ahnisti’s car outside Kennett High School in Kennett, Mo. The two grabbed shaved ice from Southern Sno, where Ahnisti works, before their play rehearsal.
Chloe and Ahnisti finish their classwork in the U.S. History classroom. Together, they share three class periods and lunch.
Ahnisti and Chloe crawl under their desks during an earthquake drill during U.S. History class. Despite having three classes together, U.S. History is the only one where they sit next to each other.
Chloe and Ahnisti walk down the hallway together on their way to lunch. While the two have separate friend groups and do not always sit together at lunch or share any classes afterwards, they always float back to one another at the end of the school day.
Chloe draws a giraffe on Ahnisti's hand before they walk into school. They are always sharing their drawings and writings with each other, drafting a collection in a journal that they pass back and forth every week.
Chloe and Ahnisti work on quiz bowl questions after school. Quiz bowl, where students compete against other schools in scholastic and event-based topics, is one of the many extracurriculars the two share.
Ahnisti and Chloe grab their belongings out of Ahnisti’s car before school. The two arrived at school early for marching band practice, which they joined together their freshman year.
