Darian Weeks leans against a chair at his barbershop, The Weekly Barber, listening to Christian gospel on a sunny Wednesday morning in downtown Sedalia, Missouri. As Darian and his youngest brother, Stephen, wait for the first client of the day, a man walks into the shop in search of life advice, not a haircut.
Community is central to Darian’s life. In addition to his day job as a barber, 29-year-old Darian is a husband to Carmen Smith, 56,
grandfather, professional mixed martial arts fighter and teacher at The Body Shop Personal Training Studio in Sedalia.
“Sedalia is the most familiar place in the world,” Darian said. “Once you enter Sedalia, you’re familiar with everybody. It’s such a comfortable
place to stay.”
Darian left, holds up a mirror for Zander Daily so that he can inspect his new haircut and trimmed beard. “Major shoutout to my new barber. All caps, italicized and underline it all,” said Daily, who received his first haircut after moving to town three weeks prior.
Carmen left, cooks fried green tomatoes as her husband Darian practices head kicks in their kitchen. The couple went back-and-forth discussing the possibility of Weeks accepting a last-minute mixed martial arts fight planned for the following week in Dallas before ultimately declining the offer.
MMA fighter Darian trains at The Body Shop Personal Training Studio. “My goal is to fight every person that I can,” Darian said. “I want to be known as one of the best fighters to have ever stepped in the ring.”
Darian ends his workout with a mile-long run along U.S. Route 65. Weeks jokingly argued with his coach, John Maupins, about the distance being more than a mile, until they ultimately mapped out the route and determined it was, in fact, exactly a mile.
Darian reaches out to his pet duck, Quackers, at his home in Sedalia, Mo. Through trial and error, Weeks built a chicken coop without any prior experience after watching a few YouTube videos. He said he has a soft spot for animals and has had Quackers for two years.
Darian pretends to bite the hand of his 8-month-old grandchild, Ward Hutchison, at his home in Sedalia. Weeks, who has five grandchildren by marriage, is referred to as “Papa.”
Darian left, instructs Max Camacho, 8, on how to keep his head up while throwing punches during a youth mixed martial arts class at The Body Shop Personal Training Studio. Weeks likes to stay involved in the community by hosting three youth and adult mixed martial arts classes every week.
Darian, left, talks with his wife, Carmen Smith, 56, about removing stitches from his hand inside his barbershop, The Weekly Barber. Weeks injured his hand while cutting open a watermelon with new Cutco knives that his wife had sharpened a few days before.

Reina Benton, 2, pokes her grandfather, Darian, in the back while Darian's wife, Carmen, holds their grandson, 8-month-old Ward Hutchison, and their 3-year-old granddaughter Briley Hutchison pulls at her brother’s foot. Darian, who acts as a father figure for the kids, said he doesn’t want children of his own even though he enjoys mentoring youth.
Darian stretches his back while listening to Christian gospel. Darian’s faith influences his virtuous lifestyle, which he says he hopes makes his grandmother proud.
