Story Summary

_______________________________________

When Jan and Richard Bahner retired from Sacred Heart School in Sedalia, Mo., in 2019, they had accumulated 85 combined years of teaching, raised three daughters, and nurtured a marriage that still has them holding hands as they walk their town’s parks and streets. Through it all, Jan and Richard, now 70 and 71 years old, held on to their high school dream of writing and performing.

They now live that dream as they write and perform plays at the Liberty Center Association for the Arts in Sedalia. Their latest production is a stage adaptation of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None, in which Richard acts and Jan directs.

Retired couple Jan Bahner, 70, and Richard Bahner, 71, brush their teeth at home on September 27, 2023, in Sedalia, Mo. They brush their teeth together every morning. “The retired life is my best time,” said Jan.

Jan dances backstage as she waits with her husband Richard before they both perform in the play 'And Then There Were None' at the Liberty Center Association for the Arts. “I also hope to use performance to change others,” said Jan.

Jan returns to school as a substitute teacher to instruct primary school students so she can supplement her income. The extra money will help her maintain her dream of working in the arts.

Retired couple Jan and Richard take a walk in Katy Park, as they practice script dialogue for the play 'And Then There Were None'. They started to love performance in high school. They have experienced many mistakes in their performances for about 44 years, but they have not given up. "Performance is my dream. I really love performing," said Richard.

Jan and Richard cook dinner together at home to help reduce spending. “I don't like cooking, but with Richard I'm willing to cook together,” said Jan.

Jan and Richard eat dinner together at home. They typically cook quick meals so they have more time to rehearse for community theater performances.
