Olya and Mark Melnik use their home and the family coffee shop as church spaces for Bible study, creating an underground Christian community. The Slavic-American wife and husband, both 23, met at a youth gathering when they were 15, and saw a need for a home church in Sedalia after visiting similar home churches in California and Florida. “You’d see the younger people [in Sedalia], they’d go to church, and then after church they’d party, get into trouble,” says Mark. He and Olya wanted to form real relationships and to walk an authentic Christian walk. “Why don’t we just invite these people to our house, have dinner or something, and worship Jesus?”
Olya is 27 weeks pregnant and the couple places a strong emphasis on family, community, and living intentionally. They hope to work towards securing two more homes for their church, to offer a dedicated space for men and women to do life on life discipleship together. “Our lives are an open book. We want to be a shining light in the darkness for people, because Jesus lives in us.”
