MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AT THE SCS PASTORAL COMPLEX

On June 15, 2026 His Eminence Jose Cardinal Advincula, D.D., Archbishop of Manila presided over the Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit to open the Academic Year 2026-2027. The Holy Eucharist was participated by various seminaries with their formators and seminarians. Each school or academic year is usually formally opened through the Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit. As every seminary presents the number of seminarians to the Cardinal, Msgr. Noly A. Que, LRMS presented the 30 seminarians of the Lorenzo Mission Institute for the Academic Year 2026-2027. In his homily, the Cardinal emphasized these 5 important points: First, the Holy Spirit is the principal agent of every seminary formation. Every seminarian has to rely on the gifts of the Holy Spirit; Second, the Holy Spirit helps each seminarian to discern. Disernment is not synonymous with choice or mere preference but it is an imbued gift from the Holy Spirit; third, the Holy Spirit creates agents of mission. It is not a mission to be managers or skilled workers but a leader with a heart of the Good Shepherd; fourth, it is the Holy Spirit who give gifts for the building of the Christian community. Thus, the priesthood is imbued gift from the Holy Spirit for without the Holy Spirit there will be no priesthood; fifth, the Holy Spirit creates a special joy for someone who becomes a priest and a servant of God.

CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION (CPE)
The Lorenzo Mission Institute promotes the Clinical Pastoral Education among seminarians who are already at the Configuration Stage (Theology Level) to enhance their ministry among the vulnerable and the helpless. It is a serious and concentrated program where the seminarians are immersed with the sick. The entire CPE program helps the seminarian to develop a spiritual and pastoral care for people. It is an intensive training for priests in order for them to be competent in hospital apostolate serving as chaplains, and developing a shepherd's heart for the vulnerable.
The Ratio Fundamentalis no. 163 reinforces this path of development among seminarians. It says: "Due attention should be given to the human sciences, such as sociology, pedagogy, and psychology, in the aspects most relevant to formation for priestly ministry. This will expand within seminarians the capacity to know the human soul, in all its richness and frailty, in order to facilitate the formulation of calm and balanced judgements regarding people and situations." The CPE is also a practical ministry that equips an individual towards compassion and shepherding. It addresses personal issues to shape the individual towards pastoral competence and healthy intersubjectivity.
The Second Plenary Council (PCP II) also encourages and promotes the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) for those priests who intend to do their apostolate in hospitals and similar locus of pastoral care for the sick. The CPE equips them for competency and the necessary preparation for their ministry among the sick. The PCP II no. 617 says: "Encouragement and on-going formation, such as Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), should be given to priests who show an aptitude and desire to minister to the sick in hospitals. Suitable material support should be given to those who volunteer or are assigned to this difficult ministry."
