Our Lady of Lourdes Parish
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish
Tabaco, Albay
The concern and the advent of a parish for the Filipino-Chinese began in 1958 when Fr. Stanislaus Chu was sent to take care of the pastoral needs of the Chinese in the first district of the province of Albay. This took place through the initiative of Bishop Flaviano Ariola, D.D. who was the bishop of Legazpi. The pastoral care for the Filipino-Chinese that was to be done by Fr. Chu was not only limited to the province of Albay but it included the province of Catanduanes. When Fr. Chu arrived, he taught at Pei Ching School. He would say Sunday masses for the Chinese residents of Tabaco who were just around 200 at that time. However, the masses were done in a separate place. It was only in 1960 that a chapel was built for the Filipino-Chinese community. It was simultaneously chosen when the Chapel was built to have Our Lady of Lourdes as the patroness of the community.
In 1966, Fr. Paul Wang from Legazpi succeeded Fr. Stanislaus Chu who was told to teach at St. Joseph School in Naga City. The appointment of Fr. Paul Wang was from the consent of Bishop Flaviano Ariola, D.D. who was bishop of Legazpi and Bishop Juan B. Velasco D.D. who was the bishop in-charge of the Filipino-Chinese Apostolate. It was in October 1993 that both St. Jude Thaddeus Chapel and Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel were both declared as personal parishes.
