Lucena
The Holy Rosary Catholic School began in 1960 through the initiatives of Fr. Joseph Sun. Bishop Alfredo Ma. Obviar accepted and permitted Fr. Joseph Sun to begin the apostolate among the Chinese in Lucena City. He began an evangelization among the Chinese through an establishment of a school and shortly after was the establishment of a chapel that would congregate the Filipino-Chinese residents in Lucena. The school began with just one room for the kindergarten which also eventually was named as Holy Rosary Kindergarten. Initially, the first kindergarten school began with 56 pupils who were all with of Chinese descent. Two years later, the grade school began and those pupils who were in the kindergarten level entered grade 1. The first graduation happened in 1968 with 19 pupils who graduated. The first high school students were mostly from the elementary level and 21 students were enrolled that year. In 1970, the school had extended into a two storey building and an annex building was added because of the influx of students. Besides, a laboratory and a library was to be included in that building. In 1972, the first 19 graduates from high school were witnessed.
When Fr. Joseph Sun died on April 14, 1972, the entire school that he dreamt of to foster an evangelization project reached completion. That meant, a kindergarten building, an elementary department, and a high school building were all visible to everyone's eye. Fr. Sun died just days before the first high school graduation of 19 students.
Following Fr. Joseph Sun's death, Fr. John B. Li succeeded him to continue his legacy and apostolate. He began involving in the formation of the Filipino-Chinese Youth through projects that had to do with Christian education. There were programs that involved the families in their Christian formation to supplement what the school was not able to provide.
In 1975, a second annex building was constructed with the assistance of the Board of Trustees and in 1976, the previous laboratory was renovated. With the growing concern for the evangelization, the school chapel was also completed along with the construction of the annex building. To give honor to Fr. Joseph Sun as the founder of the school, a new building was constructed and part of it was named after him. Fr. John B. Li died on January 21, 1996 and it was through him that the Holy Rosary Catholic School were 900 students were already enrolled.
