Year 4
In this unit we looked at how and why data is collected over time. We considered the senses that humans use to experience the environment and how computers can use special input devices called sensors to monitor the environment.
To explain that data gathered over time can be used to answer questions
● I can choose a data set to answer a given question
● I can suggest questions that can be answered using a given data set
● I can identify data that can be gathered over time
In this lesson we looked at what data can be collected and how it is collected. We thought about data being collected over time. We also thought about questions that can and can’t be answered using available data, and reflected on the importance of collecting the right data to answer questions.
We watched a video and counted the different colour cars.
Nayyab
We looked at different data tables and answered questions based on the data.
To use a digital device to collect data automatically
● I can explain what data can be collected using sensors
● I can use data from a sensor to answer a given question
● I can identify that data from sensors can be recorded
We used the data logger to take readings of temperature, light and sound in different areas of the school. We had to make sure we kept still and quiet and didn't hold the sensor in our hand as this would effect the reading.
Mustafa
We looked at what a data logger was and identified all its parts and sensors.
To explain that a data logger collects ‘data points’ from sensors over time
● I can identify a suitable place to collect data
● I can identify the intervals used to collect data
● I can talk about the data that I have captured
We recorded data at different locations in the school.
We noted the temperature, brightness and sound.
To recognise how a computer can help us analyse data
● I can view data at different levels of detail
● I can sort data to find information
● I can explain that there are different ways to view data
This data has been shown in a line graph. The temperature was recorded every hour.
This data shows the light, temperature and sound in a room. The temperature stayed constant whereas the light levels changed drastically throughout the day. This was because sometimes it was sunny and sometimes cloudy.
