Year 6
This unit introduces learners to the creation of websites for a chosen purpose. Learners identify what makes a good web page and use this information to design and evaluate their own website using Google Sites. Throughout the process learners pay specific attention to copyright and fair use of media, the aesthetics of the site, and navigation paths.
In this lesson learners explored and reviewed existing websites and evaluated their content. They began to show some understanding that websites are created using HTML code.
Learning objectives:
To review an existing website and consider its structure
I can explore a website
I can discuss the different types of media used on websites
I know that websites are written in HTML
In this lesson we explored a new website, and we searched about different animals and their habitats. Firstly, we were able to explore the website freely, then we were given questions about the animals and we had to search it up to find the answer.

Learners looked at the different layout features available in Google Sites and planned their own web page on paper before creating a webpage using Google Sites.
Learning objectives:
To plan the features of a web page
I can recognise the common features of a web page
I can suggest media to include on my page
I can draw a web page layout that suits my purpose
Here I have planned my webpage, including what information I want to put on my webpage. This gave me an idea of what I will do when creating my webpage. I have planned a webpage name, logo, pictures and a title.
Here I have had a go at creating my webpage on Google Sites. I have added the relevant features of a webpage, as detailed in my plan.

During this lesson learners explored the terms ‘fair use’ and ‘copyright’. They gained an understanding of why they should only use copyright-free images and found appropriate images to use in their work from suggested sources.
Learning objectives:
To consider the ownership and use of images (copyright)
I can say why I should use copyright-free images
I can find copyright-free images
I can describe what is meant by the term ‘fair use’
In this lesson we looked at different scenarios and answered if they were copyright or copywrong. Also, we learnt to use copyright free pictures and if we use something that is copyright we should give credit to the person or people who made it . We also learnt that we can share copyright free pictures with anyone. If we take a picture, which is copyright, we should still change it and add the credit.

Learners revised how to create their own web page in Google Sites. Using their plan from previous lessons, learners created their own web page/home page. They previewed their web page as it would appear on different devices and suggested or made edits to improve the user experience on each device.
Learning objectives:
To recognise the need to preview pages
I can add content to my own web page
I can preview what my web page looks like
I can evaluate what my web page looks like on different devices and suggest/make edits
For this computing lesson, we learnt how to observe our websites as they are on different devices using the preview button. This helped us to improve them and make them look professional on a phone, laptop and a tablet.
I enjoyed this lesson because it was like I really was on a laptop or phone. Also, before I used the preview button, I did not know what it looked like on any device other than a computer!
