Canvas: Log in to TLC Employee HUB each day that you work for links to TLC systems and to view any weekly updates posted. Adjust your Canvas notification settings, if needed.
Email: We will use email both during the semester and between semesters to communicate information regarding your TLC employment. This may include information about your shifts, meeting and training sessions, announcements, and surveys. Check your work email every shift during the semester; between semesters, check your work email at least once every seven days (weekly).
Email Usage:
It's for work! So remember to be professional.
It is not yours to keep! When you are no longer working at MiraCosta, this account will be deleted so do not use this email address for items you will need long-term access to (for example, do not use this email address on your FAFSA or college transfer applications).
No response: If we do not receive a response from you, we may send a reminder (email to your personal account/text message/phone call) to check your work email. Be sure @miracosta.edu email addresses are on your list of acceptable senders through your email provider.
Email on mobile device: Information about adding your work email to a mobile device can be found by visiting MiraCosta's Employee Portal.
BONUS TIP: If you add the following email addresses as 'Favorites' in your Outlook app, you can set the notifications to alert you only when you receive email from one of these: TLC@miracosta.edu , the TLC supervisors (balvarez@miracosta.edu , swang@miracosta.edu , aalvo@miracosta.edu , spultz@miracosta.edu ) , ccarlsson@miracosta.edu , apaopao@miracosta.edu , and calendar-notification@google.com .
Boundaries: Do not provide tutoring help to students via email. If you are contacted regarding assistance via email, forward the message to TLC@miracosta.edu so the Leadership Team can respond to the student and refer them to the services available. Additionally, students should not be contacting you through your personal phone or email account. If this happens or becomes an issue, please let the Leadership Team know.
Phone/Text: Occasionally and for more urgent matters, we may contact you by phone or text. Please inform TLC Administrative Assistant if you cannot receive text messages to your mobile phone number due to device limitations, financial concerns, etc.
You are also responsible for communicating with us for any changes in your availability that affect your shifts, contact information, units enrolled (Student Workers), employment issues, or if you see something that doesn’t seem right for your schedule. For any issues or concerns like these, email TLC@miracosta.edu from your work (@miracosta.edu) email account.
MiraCosta College requires employees to have a California address; email TLC@miracosta.edu if your address will be changing and you will no longer meet this requirement.
If you have questions, please ask!
Occasionally, someone from the Leadership Team may shadow you during your shift so that they can provide you feedback on your work. They will observe your approach to students and then meet with you afterward to discuss the interactions – what went well and what could go better. You may find that you want more frequent feedback; if so, please ask someone from the Leadership Team. At any time if you have problems with how to approach a certain situation, speak to a member of the Leadership Team.
If you have suggestions on how to make TLC more dynamic, user-friendly, or better in any way, please email TLC@miracosta.edu or another TLC leadership staff member you feel is appropriate. The Operations Manager may discuss your suggestions with you to see how to best implement your ideas. Your suggestions are important to us and we are always looking for ways to improve on what we are doing (for example: policies, procedures, use of space, new forms, new posters, marketing, etc.).
Our center is a major part of the support network for students in a plethora of courses. It is critical to remember that students and tutors work collaboratively and can learn from each other. We need each other to succeed and meet our goals - a strong Center and increased student success. Through our professional behavior in student interactions and our dedicated efforts, students can see that they belong here and that we care about their goals.
