The mathematics program at Milton High School consists of integrated math courses - offered at the college prep and honors level - during the first three years that address critical concepts in the areas of algebra, geometry, and statistics in alignment with the 2017 Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework (pp. 132-156). For students who excel in 9th and 10th grade honors level math courses and intend to enroll in AP Calculus BC in 12th grade, there is an option for an accelerated version of the 11th grade course that emphasizes precalculus topics while also incorporating important data analysis and statistics topics. However, students can take AP or Honors Calculus AB in senior year without having completed the accelerated 11th grade course.
While the topics addressed in the college prep and honors level versions of the integrated math courses in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade are similar, there are differences between the levels with regard to pacing, depth, and rigor, both in assignments and assessments. Students have the opportunity each year to jump from a college prep to an honors level course through successful completion of a summer assignment.
All Milton High School students must pass the equivalent of four full-year math courses to meet the graduation requirement. Math offerings for 12th grade include AP and honors level calculus and statistics courses, as well as a college prep Applied Mathematics course. Furthermore, Milton High School offers a comprehensive computer science program featuring semester elective and AP courses for students to take throughout their four years. Please be aware that all AP math and computer science courses have a required summer assignment.
Finally and most importantly, regardless of specific content or level, every math and computer science course at Milton High School features opportunities for students to use technology effectively, apply concepts to a real world context, and develop their critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving skills.
*Students planning to take AP Calculus BC in Grade 12 should consider taking AP Statistics as an elective in Grade 11.
