Frequently Asked Questions

When does academic advising occur?

Student Success Center (SSC) has a formal system to ensure that all students are provided the resources, advising, and support to maximize their potential—both inside and outside the classroom.

Academic advising begins in February when one on one meetings are scheduled with the student and their academic advisor to begin selecting courses to curate various schedule options for the upcoming academic year.

How do I know if I should sign up for a study hall or a study skills class?

Study Hall allows for more independence as students have a period to create their own work plan. While students are supervised and kept on task, students create their own approach to completing work during the class period.

Study Skills is a curriculum based class in which students are guided along the studying and preparation process. Teachers monitor students’ missing assignments, create learning plans, and facilitate task oriented schedules to support students.

How many study halls and study skills are you allowed in an academic year?

One Study Hall per academic year.

Study Skills may be taken repeatedly but may not exceed one class per semester.

Why may I not be able to take every class I request for my schedule?

The Miller School offers a wide variety of courses covering different topics and skill levels. Because of our diverse course offerings, not all classes are offered each semester. While student interests play a key role in the scheduling process. Academic advisors also must consider class sizes, credit requirements for every student, and the rotation of course availability. As a result, a student may not get every class requested for an academic year.

What if there is a course of study I am interested in, but Miller does not offer the class subject?

While we make every effort to accommodate student interests, occasionally there are classes offered with limited availability or not at all. When this occurs, a student can explore online course offerings in conjunction with their academic advisor or look to create their own curriculum through the Independent Study Program. Please note any online courses and independent study classes must be approved by the Student Success Center Administrative Team.
