We will focus on geography and ancient civilizations, using Investigating History, a curriculum designed by the Massachusetts Department of Education. You will analyze primary sources, artifacts, and writings, in order to better understand people groups, cultures, and ways of thinking around the world. You will create lots of different projects, presentations, art, and writing to show what you learn. Assignments will be posted to Google Classroom.
Units of Study:
Human origins, Neolithic and Paleolithic eras
Western Asia, the Middle East, North Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa
Central America, the Caribbean Islands, South America
Each unit will end with a final assessment question that will require you to use the research and information learned during the unit to answer this question. Social Studies is not about memorizing dates, names, and facts. Instead, it is about thinking critically about the past and the present in order to be better members of society.
Social Studies is not about memorizing dates, names, and facts.
Instead, it is about thinking critically about the past and present in order to be better members of society.
These essential questions will guide our learning for all of our units of study:
Whose stories are told?
Whose stories are NOT told?
How are they told?
Who is telling these stories?
When are they told?
How many stories are told?
This class is about developing your own writing and ideas. Plagiarism will earn you a zero.
You are in sixth grade now. Grading standards will be high. You will have opportunities to redo or improve your work so that you can learn from mistakes and failures. I will not accept requests from your grown-ups for these opportunities. You must advocate for yourself.
