Pupils will develop the ability to understand how mental, social, physical & emotional factors impact on performance in detail. They will be able to gather data, select appropriate approaches to develop performance and monitor and record performance development across the four factors. Improving practical performance is also a key aim of the course across Football, Hockey, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and Gymnastics.
At the end of the academic year pupils will be credited with an SQA award depending on the result of their two 'one-off performances' (50%) and their final exam (50%). For more information please read below or alternatively speak to a member of the PE department.
Higher PE pupils will be expected to bring appropriate PE kit on all practical days. Pupils should also ensure that they bring jotters, work booklets and charged Chromebooks to school each day as these may be required for practical and classroom based lessons. The Higher PE course will require students to complete x4 practical lessons and x2 classroom lessons per week. The amount of classroom lessons per week will increase in the lead up to the prelim and final exam. All content covered in the practical PE lessons will relate to the theoretical knowledge covered in the classroom setting.
Pupils will also be issued with regular homework tasks in an effort to consolidate learning (see course outline below for further information). It is expected that pupils submit homework before coming to class. If pupils are unsure about any homework that has been set then it is their responsibility to speak to their class teacher before the submission date.
Below is a snapshot of what will be covered in Higher PE. This gives a quick overview of the activities that will be covered throughout the year and the mandatory knowledge that will be taught during each activity block.
Please note: These activities are subject to change. Please check with the class teacher and keep up to date with Google Classroom for the most up to date information.
Below is a more detailed outline of what will be covered within each activity block. This may change slightly as the year progress however it is worth noting the homework demands and assessment demands.
Within this document there are links to revision videos and homework tasks. These may prove useful for revision purposes however will be shared with both classes at an appropriate time via Google Classroom.
Below is an example of some of the resources that will be used in Higher PE throughout the year. Pupils will be provided with each of these resources and should ensure these are brought with them to each classroom lesson.
Further revision materials will be placed on Google Classroom throughout the year.
Due to the written element equating to 50% of the overall course award, we have outlined below the revision resources that we would encourage pupils to engage with. This will allow them to recap what has been discussed in class and will hopefully prepare them for written unit assessments and portfolio work.
(1) GOOGLE CLASSROOM
Your classes Google Classroom will have various pieces of work and homework tasks that have been completed throughout the year. These tasks will have feedback and exam style questions that will allow you to consolidate your knowledge of the various different aspects of the course.
(2) JOTTERS/NOTES
The class teacher will have given important notes and practice questions over the course of the year. These are an invaluable tool however to fully revise the content it is important to do more than read over them!! Why not try and recomplete a question from class or from the homework tasks but under timed pressure?
(3) POWERPOINTS & REVISION VIDEOS
The PE department have created a catalogue of Google Slides that cover the entire Higher PE course. These are a personal revision tool for pupils at Millburn Academy and will provide with all of the key information required to answer any exam question. These Google Slides also have links to 'revision videos' that have been created by the Millburn Academy PE department. These videos are roughly 5 minutes in length and aim to provide pupils with clarity on any areas they are unsure of.
(4) BBC BITESIZE
This is a useful guide to understanding aspects of the course that you are still unsure about. PLEASE NOTE, some areas of the course may have been covered slightly differently at Millburn. Please ensure you speak to your teacher if you are unsure!! For access, please click the 'BBC Bitesize' title.
This is another useful resource made by PE teachers from across Scotland. Similar to BBC Bitesize, this may provide you with a deeper or clearer understanding about a particular aspect of the Higher course however it is important to note that some content may have been carried out differently at Millburn Academy. For acess, please click the 'SATPE Student Notes' title.
(6) SQA PAST PAPERS
SQA past papers will provide pupils with a taste for exam styled questions that have been set in previous years. We would encourage pupils to attempt these questions initially with notes however over time begin to attempt these questions with no notes and under timed pressure (3 minutes per mark).
IMPORTANT: All exam papers prior to 2019 are under the OLD format. These past papers will be of use but please note that the 2019 past paper is an accurate representation of how the future Higher exams will be laid out.
For access, please click the 'SQA Past Papers' title.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT HOW TO REVISE OR ALTERNATIVELY ARE UNSURE ABOUT A PARTICULAR ASPECT OF THE COURSE, PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR CLASS TEACHER!
Now that you have completed Higher PE, you may wish to select one of the other courses on offer in the PE department. These include NPA Sport and Fitness (Level 5) and Higher Sports Leadership.
