Types:
- Anorexia Nervosa—self-starvation and excessive weight loss
- Bulimia Nervosa—secretive cycle of binge eating followed by purging
- Binge Eating Disorder/Compulsive Eating Disorder—periods of uncontrolled, compulsive eating followed by periods of starvation or repetitive dieting
- Other Eating Disorders—a combination of the above
Signs and Symptoms:
- Refusal to maintain body weight at or minimally above normal weight
- Fear of being fat despite dramatic weight loss
- Extreme eating behaviors
- Episodes of bingeing and purging
- Low self esteem
- Difficulty communicating negative emotions or resolving conflict
- Perfectionist/people pleaser
- History of being bullied/physical or sexual abuse
- Feelings of loss of control
- Coexisting with other psychological disorders
- Unable to cope
